If declared incompetent by a U.S. court (something his
family or a gov't agency would have to petition the courts
for), he could be. But not for long, 2 weeks max would be
my guess. Unless his family, or the state, wants to pay
beyond what insurance will cover. And NAMI and the ACLU
work on behalf of individuals in institutions to protect
their rights, even if (sometimes especially if) they are
declared legally incompetent. Heck, it's really hard to
keep mentally ill folks who've committed crimes and are
prone to violence in an institution, never mind someone
whose offenses may be limited to posting on Usenet and
publishing family contact info.

here has ever been in real contact with him is debatable. David runs
dauben-international.com and would have access to his dad's e-mail
account. Some of his dad's e-mails originate from David's computer, and
I don't really buy that his dad would pay for a superfeeds account and
setup a newsreader and a proxy for the sole purpose of telling ASD to

about their conversations) do seem authentic enough to me.
