Object: totally OT-- recommendations for kids books?
Ok, my son is 10, but his reading level is far above that, pretty much
adult. But, of course, he's a kid. I'm looking for book suggestions
for Christmas, as we've actually run through most of our backlog of
books we've been meaning to read. And I wondered if anyone had any
thoughts?
Here are the books he's really liked lately:
the Harry Potter books, of course
the Lord of the Rings, all of them
The Enchanted Forest Chronicles (that's my book recommendation, by the
way, for boys and especially girls this age. just terrific.)

Okay, here's some of the the books I loved as a kid:
Aesop's Fables (!!)
Flowers for Algernon (I'm welling up just typing it)
The Chrysalids (ooooh, creepy!)
Crime & Punishment (just kidding)
(I was huge into horse books, Walter Farley's Black Stallion, Island Stallion,
etc etc, Anna Sewell's Black Beauty)
Lord of the Flies (poor Piggy)
Everything Greek Mythology
(You could always throw a copy of The Fountainhead into his stocking and see
what happens).
Good luck.

I recommend anything by Morpurgo, Michael -- an English author Maria
discovered in England. He has won many awards and is for the intelligent young
reader. One book, Private Peaceful is a bit sad and deals with war, but Maria
could not put it down.
His themes are often about the outsider making it, or younger persons bonding
with older ones, or some about bonds with animals.
Definitely put on your list.

Anything and everything by Terry Pratchett. There are children's books,
but the 'grown-up' ones are fine for children IMO, at least. He doesn't
like the witches books, but Wynne's been waiting on new releases since
he was twelve, I think.
Pullman's 'Dark Materials' trilogy is intended or children (and on my
pile of 'must read' books). He's written more besides. He is renowned
for having an odd world view - he's a prominent atheist. If you want
Xmas books to be Xtian, look elsewhere.
That's twenty or thirty books. Enough to be going on with.

We started the first one of these... NOT for young kids, I think.
Very scary, and very adult vocabulary. I was intrigued and wanted to
finish, but we got sidetracked by getting the rest of the Enchanted
Forest books, which he just loves.

Philip Pullman is very popular over here, but maybe for an older
audience - teens, perhaps. Wynne read him a couple of years ago. As I
said, I haven't managed to read any yet, but he is on my 'to read when
my head works' pile.
Ursula Le Guin has some children's books. Since she's one of the best
science fiction and fantasy writers ever, you might want to check them
out. Anne Macaffery is another author, but not if your son is opposed to
girl books. Wynne likes Tom Holt, too, but he's a few years ahead of
your son, I think. Still, you can enjoy them while he's growing up. :)
I've started to read 'Stravaganza' by Mary Hoffman. It looks promising,
and to be the start of a series. Maybe a bit old, I'm not sure. Someone
who's read 'The Lord of the Rings' should be able to cope with teen
books, unless they have sex in them, of course.

At about that age, after I had finished LOTR, I got into SF in a big way,
and I still think that Larry Niven and Jack Vance are excellent for
feeding a child's imagination, or anyone's for that matter. Stephen
Donaldson's The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever was pretty
good too, especially if you are into rings, and it might be a bit more
suitable than the other two.

my son's 5th grade class read 'ender's game' by card, just the
first one of the series, the others are a little too adult.

Madeline L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time series

That's a great suggestion,a great book.I saw L'engle speak about 7
or 8 years ago,she was very interesting...I also would recommend
"Alice's adventures in wonderland".I'm very slowly reading it now.I
know it's meant for adults as well as well as children.

We've read them. I liked them, but if you read one after another,
they kind of get one your nerves. These days I find myself saying
things like, "splendid, which in this case means.... actually quite
awful." I don't hold out great hope for the movie.

We studied it in school 2 or 3 years later with a teacher who showed us

fascinating to read the same story in a completely different light.

Here are the books he's really liked lately: the Harry Potter books, of
course
the Lord of the Rings, all of them
The Enchanted Forest Chronicles (that's my book recommendation, by the
way, for boys and especially girls this age. just terrific.) Eragon

At that age I started to get into R L Stevenson, 'Mark Twain', C S Lewis,
and Jules Verne. More modern writers I think might be suitable include
Piers Anthony (SF/Fantasy, lots of bad puns, many characters and heroes
are children), Terry Pratchett (Fantasy, very funny), and possibly Anne
McCaffrey (SF/Fantasy, quite grown-up but very clean; excellent characters).

Ok, my son is 10, but his reading level is far above that, pretty much

we've been meaning to read. And I wondered if anyone had any thoughts?

This may not be what you are looking for exactly but I just thought
I'd offer.....
For a listing of some really excellent books check out some medal
winners here:
http://www.ala.org/ala/alsc/awardsscholarships/literaryawds/literaryrelated.htm
The ALA provides lists of current and past winners in the award
categories and you may find some really excellent books there. Most
if not all should be available at your library, and if they don't have
a copy on hand, they can always get one through the inter library loan
service.
good reading.
