For me, night's the worst. Peaks around midnight. It's just

couldn't remember if I read it or dreamed it.

often implant microchips at the same time they neuter.
I goggled it and found references to doing it for recycled feral cats
that are to be released. That way if someone catches the cat again
they won't bring it to a vet a second time. One place I found they
showed punching a hole in the ear, that seemed bad to me. Seems like
it could get caught on things.
I checked my cat, he has a nick in his ear but I expect he got it
fighting.

That makes sense to do it for ferals. Easy identification. I
don't know if it would be a hazard, since cats don't like
rubbing their ears against things and if it were seriously
hung up it would probably tear. I have a cat with a nicked
ear, but I also have the cat that did it to him.

here they put a small tattoo inside cats ears when they're desexed. I
don't know if they do the same for dogs. That way it's easy for a vet
or shelter to tell if a stray has been desexed, and is therefore likely
to have a home it needs to go back to.
They also do the microchipping here, but it's only come in the the past
10 years or so, and not all cats or dogs are chipped. Mine was as a
kitten but she grew really long and the chip moved half way down her
back instead of between her shoulders. I hope they can find it if she
ever gets lost.
