Object: Trazodone questions...
I was recently started on trazodone by my neurologist for constant
headaches. I was already on Propranolol for high blood pressure and
headaches, however, that wasn't helping all of the time, so he put me
on the Trazodone.
Once I got a chance to look into the Trazodone, I found that it is
also used to treat depression, which I already take Lexapro for that.
When I was being counseled on this drug by the pharmacist, I remember
she referred to the drug as a modified tricyclic drug. I had
previously been on amitriptyline (Elavil) and nortriptyline in the
past (not at the same time), and was wondering if the Trazodone has
any of the same side effects that the amitriptlyine has? The one
bothersome side effect that I had with the Amitriptlyine was that
while I was on it, I had trouble peeing. I would have the urge to go,
but it would take longer than usual just to get started, which is why
I switched over to the Nortriptyline. Does anyone know if the
Trazodone has any similar side effects?
Are there any other medications out there that are good at treating
headaches? I'm not sure my headaches would be classified as
migraines, but they are an everyday issue. My headaches came about
after I had numerous brain surgeries to fix a problem I had with
hydrocephalus and a cyst on my optic nerve. Of course, I had
headaches as a symptom of the hydrocephalus and the cyst, however,
even after all of the surgeries, I still have the headaches. Does
anyone know of any other good medications besides Trazodone to treat
these kind of headaches?
Thanks.

Your pharmacist was full of bs. Trazodone is not similar to the older
class tricyclic antidepressants. The main side effect of tricyclics is
anti-cholinergic side effects, which causes things like urinary
retention.
Trazodone is known as a tetracyclic antidepressant and works very
differently than tricyclics. It is a calming AD, without anti-
cholinergic side effects that is frequently used for insomnia.

There are a bunch of drugs FDA approved for headache prevention. One
of the best is depakote. I believe Topomax is another. Tricyclic ADs
are used for headaches a lot, Neurologists love tricyclics for
headaches. But youve explained you didnt have a good experience with
tricyclics. Look up depakote and maybe stick to just drugs that are
FDA approved for headache relief, a lot of this "off label" stuff is a
bunch of bunk.

One side effect that I get would be considered the asset. Trazodone
helps me to sleep. What my doctor told me was that Trazodone was
little used for depression because it would often make the patient
sleepy. That is why I do take it.
I take Wellbutrin for depression and a large dose of Adderall RX for
my ADD symptoms. The latter can make it difficult to get to sleep and
stay asleep. Therefore when the ADD meds are talken later in the day I
am to take the Trazodone for sleep 45 minutes before retiring..
Too high a dose did allow me to sleep but resulted in a hazy sensaton
for 30 minutes or more on awakening. The adjusted doseage eliminated
that problem.
Not sure if any of this is helpful.

Yeah, I gathered that it is used quite a bit for sleep as I was
searching the internet for information on the drug. In the past, I
have used Ambien CR for sleep, although I would use it sparingly, just
making sure I had the 8 hours of sleep before taking it. Now that I
am on the Trazodone, I don't have to worry about taking the Ambien CR.
As far as using the Trazodone for depression, I have found that all
depression medications I have taken in the past, I have always taken
in the evening anyway, although, I am not taking it for depression,
but, you never konw, it may help along with the Lexapro with the
depression. I am just hoping that it will kick in for the headache
pain that it was prescribed for.
I am not sure my approach to things is not always the best when it
comes to taking new medication. Anytime I get a prescription from one
of my Dr's for new mediction, I always research it online, however, I
have been told by family members just to take it and not worry about
all of the details as long as the side effects are being watched for.
As far as side effects are concerned for you, have you noticed any
problems with peeing since you have been on this medication? Reason I
ask is because when I was counseled on the medication by the
pharmacist, she said that this was in the class of drugs referred to
Modified Tricyclic Drugs (Anti-Depressants). I used to be on Elavil
and had the one undesirable side-effect of having trouble peeing,
especially starting. I am just hoping that this particular drug
doesn't have that side effect.
