I've been trying to teach Maia numbers, but she hasn't really gotten it yet.
One of the ways is with peanuts. She loves peanuts. About the only time I
can give them to her when they won't conflict with something else is when I
get home from work. I just give her a couple, though, because that's close
to dinnertime.
"Two," I've been saying. "Two peanuts." Then I retrieve the jar from the
high shelf in the cupboard where I've stashed them to keep them away from
her, and I count them out for her, "one, two," into her palm.
Now, she's taken to leading me by the finger to that cupboard, throwing my
hand out to it, and then putting her hands up to her cheeks and saying,
"Two," empathetically, as if this is going to cause me to get some peanuts
for her in the way that saying "Peas" ("Please") gets her apple juice.
She's so cute, sometimes.
When she gets the peanuts, she always retreats to sit by herself on this
step that leads into the family room. I think she does that to protect the
peanuts--not that she has any real fear that they're going to be taken from
her by Kristina or me, just that she remembers that that's what she's
supposed to do when she has something precious that she wants to keep.
She saves the last one for a very long time. She will lick it and put it
into her mouth and suck it, and then take it out again. Sometimes, she can
hang onto it for a good twenty minutes. Once, when we were playing, and she
finally chewed it, she put her finger into her mouth and wet it, and then
put that finger into my mouth--I think, so I could taste it, too.

does she say "peanuts?"
She's learning this one, but she's struggling with it. She hasn't yet made
a consistent sound that I can reproduce.

Keep her from reading the funny pages for as long as possible. "Peanuts?!
This is Snoopy?! WHERE THE HELL ARE THE PEANUTS?!"
(Of course, if she says that at such a young age, you might have to look
into an exorcist.)
Why IS the comic called Peanuts?!
