Object: ***UPDATE*** Thyroid Cancer
Well first of I'm ok mentally...
I went to the Shands Hospital Medical/Cancer Center today to see a Thyroid
Cancer Specialist, she is wonderful, smart and most current on today's
technology. I am very please with the center and my new Endocrinologist.
I have two things I wanted to let everyone know about.
First item, the diagnosis was as I suspected but couldn't get the Endo I had
to do anything about it. So my reason to find another Endo and get a second
opinion. I do in fact have a recurrence of Thyroid Cancer. It was just as
I suspected before with my blood test contradicting my scans. So I will be
receiving a rather large dose of Radio Active Iodine (RAI) to combat the
cancer. She will also be administering a Lithium drug to slow the process
of shedding the RAI too fast, thus giving it a longer chance to do what
it's suppose to do destroy the cancer. I will not be going hypo to do this.
She will be using a drug called Thyrogen which causes the TSH to rise high
enough without withdrawal from my meds, so NO MORE HYPO yay!!!! I believe I
will be able to have all this done here locally, so I won't need to take
time off to get the shots, but will need to take time off after I swallow
the RAI pill.
Second item, the Doc conducted another Ultra Sound of my neck, after
reviewing the films from the Ultra Sound my other Endo ordered, she found
them to be lacking... My old Endo didn't order Ultra Sounds of the sides of
my neck just the Thyroid Bed. The right side of my neck looked good, the
left side, the doc discovered two enlarged suspicious looking lymph nodes.
She had another Endocrinologist who is a specialist in Thyroid cancer come
in to take a look as well and she concurs. So they did a FNA (Fine Needle
Aspiration) in six locations and withdrew some fluid out of each Lymph node
to look at on slides. The extra fluid went into a tube to go to a lab in
California. What does this mean? If the lymph nodes have Thyroid Cancer I
have to have more surgery. It's actually called a neck dissection after I
recover a bit from that, I'll have to do the First Item. I will get the
results from the slides on Friday, the little vile they sent to California?
She won't be sending that unless the slides come back negative. Her comment
on the Lymph Nodes? "I'm not going to tell you what I think it is until the
results back to confirm it on Friday." Sounds a bit bleak to me.
I just want every one to know, emotionally I'm a bit stressed, but I'm good,
I'm relived actually. I knew I wasn't crazy, and I knew there was something
and it's a big relief to have a specialist tell me that the only reason my
x-Endo wasn't cooperative was because I knew more then her and it scared her
or intimidated her actually. She was really receptive to me and all that I
knew about this and it was great to have a Doc who knew more then me for a
change :o)

Sounds like you have a good doc. Good luck.

I guess this is good news, in a way. You knew there was
something wrong, and advocated for yourself to find a better doc
who would deal with it. Best wishes for the biopsy results. I
hope that turns out to be nothing important.
I'll be here for you, either on asd or email, if you want.

Well, if anyone needs a role model for
finding silver linings, Jane, you're it.
But please don't wear yourself out being
stronger than you need to be. You have
many, many people to lean on, to express
any range of feelings you have. You'll
soldier through, I'm sure, but the asd

Ditto. Gayle always knows the right thing to say, and says it far
better than I ever could.
I'm sorry it's back Jane, but can understand how having the validation

Although my health problems are nothing compared to what you're going

Thank you all... I imagine there will be days of "I can't take this

think I'm in a little bit of shock over the Lymph Nodes and I'm still
exhausted from the 8 hours worth of driving, my neck hurts like a
bugger, along with my jaw. Probably due to the six times they
inserted needles into those Lymph nodes. Anyway as always my cyber
family is there for me, wish I could give you all hugs! (Thor!)

For me the knowing something would be better than not knowing and
wondering, so I guess it's good news in a way. The NO HYPO sounds
good as well, as does finding a Dr. that you can trust.
Good luck on your way forward with this. At least there is a way
forward.

She was really receptive to me and all that I
knew about this and it was great to have a Doc who knew more then me for a
change :o)

I'm sorry Jane, that is rough. You don't deserve this. Stay strong,
keep posting.
