it's a lost cause. of my 33 years, 29 have been spent behind
specs...and, i have to say, they get dirty out of *nowhere*.
i don't go out, save to go to work or buy a book or, rarely, to see a
movie. it's not like i lead a very *physical* lifestyle so i have no
idea where all the mess comes from. it's to the point where sometimes
i just give up and say i'll worry about it later.

For 94 cents, at Wal-Mart, [my *other* apartment][I shop there all the
time - I don't work there] I found 20 pre-moistened lens cleaning tissues
in a ziplock bag. Brand name - Faded Glory. They've worked wonders for
me.

Ordinary washing-up liquid is hard to improve on. Put a little drop onto a
piece of paper kitchen towel, wet the towel, wipe the specs all over
(frames and lenses), then polish with a dry paper towel.
If your specs are fairly robust and you are wearing your spare pair, then
putting the specs in the wash-bowl with the dishes works pretty well too;
put them in at the beginning, with the drinking things, not at the end with
the greasy roasting-tins!
Stuff you have to pay for is for emergencies only ;))

Does putting them in a dish-washer work too? The powder says it adds
sparkle. ;)
I wouldn't trust anything of mine to a dish-washer machine!
We have one installed but never used. Useless for pans.

My mom was an optician for 40 years. One of her pet peeves was people who
would come in to have their glasses repaired, and they were caked with dirt,
sweat, fingerprints, hair, earwax, skin flakes, and other various nasty
things. So, YES, you should clean your glasses more often!

And I bet all those people were long-sighted or far-sighted. My
optometrist pointed out years ago that mine were usually clean and with
all their screws tightened - it does help when you can see the glasses
you've taken off!
The state of my glasses is probably a good measure of my long-term
illness. They only get dirty when I'm down for more than a few days.
