Violet Reader's Companion |
Violet has a habit of using terms like COBOL, Hobson's choice, and the like.
i've decided to begin writing a Reader's Companion which will expand upon
Violet's myriad allusions and references.

Ooh! Can I have some room in there too? I promise not to write down to
my usual lowest common denominator standards, especially since few
Americans do. I can even go back to using common British English foreign
words and phrases you won't know.

She should possibly change her name,
Sorry for previous post, it was a reaction and reflex,
I am responsible for what I say.

That sounds intersting! I think COBOL is a programming language (I just
can pragamm a bit in Basic), of Hobson's choice I haven't heard so far.
I'm going to google for it to satisfy ma curiosity until your Reader's
Companion will be finished. Thanks!

The usual description of 'Hobson's choice' was that there was a
stable-owner called Hobson, who said 'you can have any horse you want,
as long as it's the first you come to'.

Thank you! Could be called Henry Ford's Choice, too: 'You can paint it
any color, so long as it's black.' Though it's not proven he ever said that.
