VNS for depression |
19 million Americans suffer from depression. About 20 to 30 percent of
them don't respond to traditional treatment. Now, a surgically
implanted device is giving these patients hope. Vegus nerve stimulation
is only prescribed for severe depression that doesn't improve after at
least four attempts at standard therapy. So it offers hope for about
half of the people that doctors can't offer anything more to. The VNS
device is about the size of a small pocket watch and weighs less than
one ounce. It's implanted, surgically, in the patients left chest area.
A thin thread like wire runs under the skin to the left vagus nerve in
the neck. The brain isn't touched in the procedure, it's stimulation of
the left vagus nerve that improves mood. The stimulation comes on every
five minutes and lasts about 30 seconds. Patients don't notice a
difference immediately and it can take up to two years to feel the full
