Object: Voter Registration Deadline
In Missouri, today (October 11) was the last day to register to vote
in the upcoming November general election, if you are not already
registered. Does that vary state to state? Don't know...
Remeber, the polls open on Tuesday, November 7 for Republicans and on
Wednesday, November 8 for Democracts. (Just kidding, it's NOV 7 for
everybody).

No police or fire departments? Open the
prison gates? No checks issued for the
disabled, poor, or elderly? Road and
bridge maintenance not gonna happen?
Garbage pilin' up in the cities? Public

yeah of course thats true
it just seems like sometimes it really has gotten way out of hand........Big
Brother seems quite alive and well
and what with Bush saying the problem with Tom Foley is due to hot-bodied 16
year old male illegals tempting him, not Tom Foley's behaviour (and he says
this at a Boys Club Luncheon, of all things.........Speaker of the House
sucks up and says oh thank God he's named the "real" culprits here, sheeeit)
of course its the citizens who keep services running, not the government
necessarily
imagine them all walking off

Mark, not Tom. You'll need the right
name if you choose to urge your reps to
push for a full investigation? Or, I bet
it'll fade away when it's not great

Gayle

those are all very good points
yeah I was reading about a few regular people named after scandalized
politicians and how much they got sick of people teasing them because they
had the same name, I'm kinda "Foley'd" out, to be honest
Still I couldn't hardly believe that jackass made that comment, much less
the Speaker of the House backing him up........everytime I think I've seen

No one said a word criticizing Oprah
when she visited the Houston shelter,
grasped the hands of a woman who'd lost
what little she had, gazed deeply into
her eyes and said (approximately),
"Promise me that you'll try to believe
that this might turn out to be a good
thing that happened to you because now
you're headed towards a better life."
Not such a different sentiment (imo)
but, it's all in the packaging of the
message, I guess. And how the speaker is
perceived, in general.

Well, personally, I find it much easier
to relate to those with "working class"
backgrounds like mine. Much easier.
Money can't buy happiness -- but it sure
can act as a buffer against a lot of the
***** that happens. Katrina evacuations
are a good example. Some folks who
wanted to leave didn't have cars or
couldn't affors gas, couldn't afford bus
tickets or the motels they might have to
stay in. And some of them couldn't
afford to risk their jobs by leaving
town to stay with relatives in another
state.
I did hear responses to those
circumstances like "they coulda put it
on their credit cards or borrowed it".
Responses like that are evidence, to me,
of ignorance of what poverty really is.

Oh, I think a lotta people did notice
but as Churchill said, "We often stumble
over the truth, through no fault of our
own. Most of us get up and brush
ourselves off, pretending it never
happened."
When folks look at poverty, I think a
lot of non-productive guilt creeps in
when it becomes too painful. So they
look away. Or expect "the government" to
solve it. Nonsense. imo.
I'm not poor now, but I easily could be
again with a few bad turns of the cards.
In the meantime, I've got my own little
methods for 'redistributing the wealth'.
And, consumers could change the world
through their dollars. If they only
knew. imo.
