Object: Want to quit my new job during my probation period....
I got a new job in a printing company one and a half month ago. Before
working as an official employee, I have to work for three months. After
this probation period, I will become official employee with insurance and
they would raise my pay also. Sounds pretty stable and nice. Though the
problem is this is not the job I really want. I took this job because I
need money and my skill is qualified when they posted their ad. Other than
that, there is no meaning for me to stay there. Last week, I decided to
quit it so I can go for what I really want, working in TV station, which
should be much harder to get in I know. Because of my education background
and issues with parents, I gave up every chance I may get into that field.
Finally, I decided so I should quit this job asap. However, the person who
is training me, which is a pretty nice person, kept telling me that he is
going to have a vacation soon so I better learn how to deal with the job
before he leaves or nobody is gonna help solving any problem there might be,
and how busy the company would be in the busy seasons. I thought I rather
be so busy for what I want to work on plus the amount of my pay is not
higher than anywhere else either so I should not stay any longer.
My problem arose.... First of all, I feel bad about quitting the job during
probation period. But I don't want to waste no more time..... I know it
would sound stupid though I decided to quit after the guy would come back
from vacation because I don't want him to worry about the company during his
vacation. Second of all, I don't know what I should say to the boss when
quitting..... Do people quit during probation?? Sigh,....dont' know what
to do.

I spend the first couple of months really hating any job too. After you
get settled into it things improve greatly. I still spend most of the
time at work wanting to run away though...but I'm not as uncomfortable
and when you know the procedures it's not really too tough.
I say stick to it until you're past 90 days - or have another job lined
up.
Don't underestimate an employment position with stability. I love the
tech industry but it doesn't help my anxiety that I work for a large
company. Were you to visit my office you'd think the place was pretty
busy, but most of the 500k sq feet is totally empty.
When you walk through the detritus of the other floors which had all
employees axed, it's unsettling and certainly doesn't make me feel like
I've got a steady paycheck for the future.

By me the first month or so is not that bad... later on I get
into the sunk in resentment pits.

Thanks, Franz.
I, in fact, don't hate the job or the people there at all. I just don't
feel right about myself being there. Yes, I can stay there and just work
and even work longer....but to me, working there would make me like a
machine intalled in a factory, turned off at night and switched on in
daytime and going no where kindda. That freaks me out...... I will do like
what you said, stick with it for a while, and I will keep sending out resumes
and see if there is anywhere I can go.

You have several options. One is to keep the job while you look for another
job, that way you have money coming in. Can you do that?
However, If you absolutely hate this job and know you will quit, then quit.
The probation period works both ways, its to see if the company likes you,
AND IF YOU LIKE THEM. hey if you don't like it, get out, its not your
responsibility that someone else has a good vacation. He will be fine even
if you quit. I once quit a job on the first day during training after 3
hours.

Thanks Juno, look for another job while remain working sounds a good idea.
I would like to do that though I am not sure how to manage it.....I mean
like setting up interviews. Once I got appointments for interview if I get
any, that means I have to get a day or two off right, hmmm....ok, I will
plan on it then. Also, I like the idea of the probation period you said,
working both ways!! That's really true.

When you talk to the new company tell them you are working now and
need some leeway in scheduling an interview. they may be willing to
do an interview over the phone, I've done that before. If they are
serious, they will work with you. If they're not, then who cares.
If you can't find a really great job, keep in mind that for a lot of
people the job is just a job, something to make the bucks so you can
do what you want with the rest of your life.
Good luck in finding something you like, though. don't give up
without a good try.
