Object: We just had an earthquake here!!
5.6 magnitude, about 20 miles north of us. My daughter seems a bit
excited, my oldest son was scared, and my youngest was really scared
and was crying. God that was really scary to me! I've never been in
an earthquake here in California.

I think it was 1994 last I was driving about LA, there looked
to be some broken buildings.
I don't get them where I was (am) living. However once had a small
one which created a slight crack in the brick work in the house
I used to have... that was years ago though.
I've seen stuff about them, evil stuff.

It was so strong we had no idea that it was an earthquake.
I thought I broke the axle on my truck until we got out and noticed it was
bouncing about two feet straight up and down.
The steel light poles down the street were whapping back and forth like

....they, uh, *are* made of plastic. Fiberglass and resin wound and
layered in all sorts of patterns on long steel mandrels.
The only earthquake I've been in was about a 4.8 or so and it was during
my 3 minute commute to work. I was *pissed*, if I had stayed at work for
another 15 minutes or left 15 minutes early I would have been able to
sit on my ***** and ride it out. Fortunately I was living in the SF
Presidio at the time and it's one of the very few spots in SF where
houses are built on bedrock. The George Lucas' place is just about a
half kilometer from where my apt was.

Nope... 'fraid not. These were the ~25' freeway overhanging poles that
were in town for the last thirty years... definitely made out of metal.

I can't decide which I would be more scared in a Hurricane or a
Earthquake. I've already did the Hurricane. I think an Earthquake
would probably scare me more, there is no preparing for one, it just
happens.
Glad everyone is ok!

Now if you were in the Philippines you wouldn't have to chose, you
could have both. Although they call hurricanes typhoons there.

Oh yeah, I definitely wouldn't like living on a small island during a

Something that impressed me, during the evening thunderstorms, with
lightening and all, power company workers would be up the poles fixing
things. Jobs were hard to get, and jobs that actually paid were
harder, but still that took nerve.

When I was working for the ambulance we went to a call where a linesman
had electricuted himself on the line and fallen off the pole. He hurt
bad.

A former neighbor worked for the CHP. He told me of a call he went on
where a farm worker moving irrigations pipes had let the pipe get to
close to a high voltage distribution line, and the power arced over.
He said that it blew off the soles of the worker's shoes. The CHP guy
said he had a hard time not laughing while at the scene. I don't
remember if the worker survived or not.

Electrical burns are nasty. It blows a hole in wherever you touched and
you can see burn marks up the nerves and blood vessels, but they still
look better than chemical burns.

Yep... days vs seconds.
....and most everything in an earthquake zone is designed to withstand any
reasonable quake (with exceptions of course).

You must not have been there very long then... they happen so often you
stop feeling anything under a 3.5.
5.6 is pretty big... That throwin' ***** around the room, emptyin' the
refrigerator size. You should expect to feel at least a couple of 3.x
aftershocks.
