We're doomed.
----
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Rep. Silvestre Reyes of Texas, who incoming House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi has tapped to head the Intelligence Committee when
the Democrats take over in January, failed a quiz of basic questions
about al Qaeda and Hezbollah, two of the key terrorist organizations the
intelligence community has focused on since the September 11, 2001 attacks.
When asked by CQ National Security Editor Jeff Stein whether al Qaeda is
one or the other of the two major branches of Islam -- Sunni or Shiite
-- Reyes answered "they are probably both," then ventured "Predominantly
-- probably Shiite."
That is wrong. Al Qaeda was founded by Osama bin Laden as a Sunni
organization and views Shiites as heretics.
Reyes could also not answer questions put by Stein about Hezbollah, a
Shiite group on the U.S. list of terrorist organizations that is based
in Southern Lebanon.
Stein's column about Reyes' answers was published on CQ's Web site
Friday evening.
In an interview with CNN, Stein said he was "amazed" by Reyes' lack of
what he considers basic information about two of the major terrorists
organizations.
"If you're the baseball commissioner and you don't know the difference
between the Yankees and the Red Sox, you don't know baseball," Stein
said. "You're not going to have the respect of the people you work with."
While Stein said Reyes is "not a stupid guy," his lack of knowledge said
it could hamper Reyes' ability to provide effective oversight of the
intelligence community, Stein believes.
"If you don't have the basics, how do you effectively question the
administration?" he asked. "You don't know who is on first."
Stein said Reyes is not the only member of the House Intelligence
Committee that he has interviewed that lacked what he considered basic
knowledge about terrorist organizations.
"It kind of disgusts you, because these guys are supposed to be tending
your knitting," Stein said. "Most people are rightfully appalled."
Pelosi picked Reyes over fellow Californian Rep. Jane Harman, who had
been the Intelligence Committee's ranking member, and Rep. Alcee
Hastings of Florida, who had been impeached as a federal judge after
being accused of taking a bribe.
UPDATE
Rep. Silvestre Reyes, the Texas Democrat tapped to head the House
Intelligence Committee, said Monday that despite failing to answer basic
questions about al Qaeda's makeup, he is aware of the threat the
terrorist group poses.
"The CQ interview covered a wide range of topics other than the selected
points published in the story," Reyes said in a statement to CNN. "As a
Member of the Intelligence Committee since before 9/11, I'm acutely
aware of al Qaeda's desire to harm Americans. The Intelligence Committee
will keep its eye on the ball, and focus on the pressing security and
intelligence issues facing us."
Reyes drew heat after failing to answer questions about al Qaeda and
Hezbollah posed by the Congressional Quarterly

Hopefully a libertarian revolt. But alas, revolutions never last long. Once
any revolutionary gains power, they start doing stupid things at our
expense.
That reminds me of Mel Gobson's sentiment in The Patriot. Why overthrow one
tyrant 3000 miles away only to end up with 3000 tyrants one mile away?

Oh I'm sure they had good reasons. Someone probably had a marijuana seed or
something. It just takes one seed to eventually flood the nation with the
demon weed and cause an epidemic of refer madness...
There was a case in Milwaukee a few years back over a questionable tip on
marijuana. The police raided a house looking for the suspect. They burst
into his little sister's room. She was sitting on her bed when the cops gun
"accidentally" discharged, blowing away her knee.
It's a shame. She was a promising ballet student.

Nope. The girl was 18-19 at the time and she was far along in her ballet
training. That cop ended any dancing career she might have had.
In this case, a small amount of marijuana, belonging to the girl's brother,
was eventually found in the house. I don't think that justifies the guns
drawn entry. It's ridiculous. The number of marijuana users who carry guns
is very, very small. Cops face virtually no risk going after a simple user,
and in Milwaukee a small enough amount only results in a citation anyway.
The cops faced no charges over the "accidental" shooting.

Really? The Democrats were in power during most of the Vietnam War. You'd
have thunk they'd have learned a thing or two... nope. They want a complete
stooge to chair the intelligence committee.
This episode reminds me of the Democrat woman who was viewing the Mars

The fan clubs are easy to understand in light of the common American trait
of shortsightedness.
The Republicans always promise smaller government and that is what their
fan base hopes for. But they never deliver, and often make things worse.
The Democrats always promise to end all social ills and that is what their
fan base hopes for. But they never deliver because once poor people have
jobs and start seeing how much comes out in taxes, they won't vote for
Democrats anymore.

of Satan. It's silly.

I think politicians in general are the spawn of Satan. Nobody who wants to
have power over others should ever be allowed to have it.

no. The important thing is that the democrats are in power, at
least in congress... That is the best news the U.S. and the rest of the
world has recieved in a very long time...

Did you read what I posted? Before this guy, she wanted to put a guy in
charged of the intelligence who had been impeached for bribery, and she
had even voted to impeach him!

Democrats good, Republicans bad = Republicans good, Democrats bad = <eye
roll>

Amen to that. Jordy's extremely... candid (to say the least) views on
his political
option is going to get him awfully, bitterly dissapointed sooner or
later, I'm afraid
:-\

For what I've read of him, we're more or less the same age... which
totally
puzzles me. I thought everyone stopped believing in fairies, unicorns
and
honest politicians by the age of 8.

It's true that in many ways, I'm an idealist... However, in some
ways, I think I try to be pragmatic, that's why I say I'd prefer a
democrat who isn't the all that great, to most republicans.(with the
exception maybe of a moderate republican) I definatly believe in
choosing the lesser of 2 evils...

How about choosing no evil? Someone who will vow not to steal money from us
and pay for any great ideas he comes up with out of his own pocket.

Some choice.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Former national security adviser Sandy Berger removed
classified documents from the National Archives in 2003 and hid them
under a construction trailer, the Archives inspector general reported
Wednesday.
The report was issued more than a year after Berger pleaded guilty and
received a criminal sentence for removal of the documents.
Inspector General Paul Brachfeld reported that when Berger was
confronted by Archives officials about the missing documents, he said it
was possible he threw them in his office trash.
The report said that when Archives employees first suspected that Berger
- who had been President Clinton's national security adviser - was
removing classified documents from the Archives in the fall of 2003,
they failed to notify any law enforcement agency.
Berger, who pleaded guilty to unlawfully removing and retaining
classified documents, was fined $50,000, ordered to perform 100 hours of
community service and was barred from access to classified material for
three years.
The report said that when Berger was reviewing the classified documents
in the Archives building a few blocks from the Capitol, employees saw
him bending down and fiddling with something white, which could have
been paper, around his ankle.
However, Archives employees did not feel at the time there was enough
information to confront someone of Berger's stature, the report said.
Brachfeld reported that on one visit, Berger took a break to go outside
without an escort.
"In total, during this visit, he removed four documents ... .
"Mr. Berger said he placed the documents under a trailer in an
accessible construction area outside Archives 1 (the main Archives
building)."
Berger acknowledged that he later retrieved the documents from the
construction area and returned with them to his office.
Berger, with the authorization of former President Clinton, was
reviewing National Security Council documents on Osama bin Laden and
al-Qaida, Sudan, and related presidential correspondence. The review was
to facilitate Berger's impending testimony before the House and Senate
intelligence committees.
