I wondered about that. IE is embedded deep into Windows. You should have
made a system restore before doing it. I guess you could try a reformat
to fix it. Why can't you reinstall? Does WindowsME have a repair mode? I
can't remember.

Do you have IE6 or Windows Media Player 9 installed? Here's what
Microsoft says to do:
To resolve this issue, you can use an MS-DOS emergency disk to start
your computer. Then rename Windows Media Player files to revert your
version of Windows Media Player to version 7. After you reinstall
Windows Me, you can upgrade Windows Media Player to the latest version.
To do these things, follow these steps:1. Use an MS-DOS startup
floppy disk to start your computer.
Note If your computer starts from the hard disk instead of from the
floppy drive, you may have to change the start sequence in your
computer's CMOS settings.
a. Insert the Windows Me Startup disk.
b. Click Start, and then click Shutdown.
c. Click Restart, and then click OK.
d. When the computer restarts, choose Start Computer with CD-ROM
support, Start Computer without CD-ROM support, or Minimal Boot.
2. At the command prompt, type the following commands, and press
ENTER after each:
a c:
b cd windows\system
c ren wmp*.dll *.lld
d ren wmp.ocx *.xco
e cd \progra~1
f ren window~1 wmp9
3. Remove the Windows Me Startup floppy disk, and then start your
computer normally.
4. Reinstall Windows Me.
5. Upgrade Windows Media Player to the latest available version. To
do this, visit the Windows Update Web site. In Internet
Explorer, on the
Tools menu, click Windows Update.

yea i'm just searching around at possible ideas to fix this ,
i remember now when i updated to media 9 it said ,
you will no longer be able to reinstall windows ,
but back then i thought ,
well if i ever have to reinstall i'll delete media 9 ,
never guessing it wouldn't have an uninstaller ,
or uninstall from add / remove

Yea, the only thing I could find was creating a bootdisk and then typing
in those commands.
I just ran across this:
Try running this from the start menu->run command RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\wmp.inf,Uninstall

Well, what I can do is put all those commands in a batch file, so you'd
just have to boot up the machine and run one command that would take
care of it. I have to warn you though, I haven't written a batch file in
probably ten years, but it's nothing hard.

In the old days you almost could backup everything to a couple disks. I
remember when CD-R's came out I backed up my entire hard drive to one,
and before that I got a reel-to-reel tape drive that would backup 400MB.
