Object: Wellbutrin and Anxiety
I'm hoping some "experienced" Wellbutrin users might have some
insights to share...
I started Wellbutrin for depression about 2 months ago. It took about
two-three weeks to kick in and I had a great two weeks after that.
High energy, great moods, back to my old self so to speak. Then some
major anxiety kicked in.
I'm in a farily new relationship and there have been a few rough spots
but nothing that we're unable to deal with. I'm very very fond of
this person and have been hoping for things to get more serious as
time goes on.
When the anxiety kicked in though, all my thoughts have been about
whether or not the relationship will work out. The thoughts are very
cyclical, obsessive and exhausting.
Before the Wellbutrin, there were issues, but we we're working through
them. I had concerns, but they weren't anything I couldn't handle.
Now, this. And it all seems to have started at about week four of
taking the meds.
I've been wondering if I'd rather deal with the depression or the
major anxiety around the relationship. I'm starting to lean towards
the depression...
Can anyone give input on their experience with Wellbutrin and anxiety
as I've read that the anxiety can be a side-effect of the medication.
Are there any combinations that might work to releive both symptoms?
Thanks in advance.

Hey there,
I can speak on this from my own experience. Back in December of 2001, my doc
thought I was depressed and put me on wellbutrin for about a month, until I
had to get off it because of debilitating anxiety that set in as a result of
the medication. The end result was me getting off of it completely and this
caused the anxiety to go back to its previous state. I've tried a few other
anti-d's but nothing seems to help, so I;m currently on no medications, and
am searching for an alternate solution. So yes, wellbutrin has the
capability of increasing anxiety in certain individuals.

Wellbutrin by itself is NOT a good med to take if you have any problems with
anxiety. The anxiety can be eliminated by taking it in conjunction with a
SSRI such as celexa or prozac. I've had pretty good luck with the
Wellbutrin + SSRI combo.

Welbutrin is ok... I do have highs and lows though. It levels off as time
goes by but never completely. It forced me to quit smoking almost
imediately! It pissed me off at the time because I wanted to vomit every
time I took a drag off a cigarette but I'm sure glad now. Its been 5 years
without a smoke.
THERAPY is most important. You're going in every 2 weeks right? I can't
stress enough how talking to a good therapist can help.
Also, look into meditation. I know it sounds loopy... but when your mind
starts racing, knowing how to meditate can help you reign that beast in.
As far as the girl goes... talk to her about it. Tell her you have anxiety
issues, and ask that she's a little patient with you. Many times when I get
over axious I don't even realize it. If I'm with someone that knows about my
problem and they say "Hey! Aren't you wigging out for no reason?" it helps a
lot.

This varies from person to person. I've never met a therapist I can work
with. I've done an OK job of dealing with my issues by way of an education
in philosophy and lots of introspection and journaling. Therapists just
annoy me. Being medicated to the gills has also helped a lot.

Well, therapy takes both a good therapist (they are rare) AND a good patient
(even rarer.) Therapy didn't work for me until I wanted it to. When I was
finally so fed up with everything and realized that reality was definitely
not what I had assumed it was all along, I started getting better.
As far as philosophy goes... it sucks. It's degraded into "the meaning of
language" and rather than argue about what reality is, they argue about what
the questions mean. Now physics... that's where it's at. The second coming
of Jesus will start inside a particle accelerator. "The immaculate
collision"
