I was in your city today. I knew there was a chance of rain
but I didn't expect the first thunderstorm of spring.

No, my oldest daughter is in 7th grade and she was competing
in the State Mathcounts contest. It's a nation wide thing sponsored
by Engineers and companies that hire engineers like Shell and
Texas Instruments. They hope to encourage kids that are good
in math to think about the engineering profession. All three
Temple middle schools placed at the regional competition and
sent kids to State. The State winners get to go to Detroit in
May for the National competition. A school in Sugarland won the
team competition and one of the kids at the same school won
the individual competition with a perfect score!
All the kids got a TI-83 calculator and some other little freebies.
They also had drawings for 5 DVD players, 20 or so CD players,
several MP3 players, 4 computers (2 were for the coaches/teachers),
4 TI-84 calculators (2 were for the coaches/teachers) and 5 $500
drawings for the coaches/teachers. My daughter didn't win any of
the drawings. There were almost 300 kids competing.
The competition was held at the Renaissance Hotel and all the kids
were put up for free plus those that had to travel real far like from
El Paso were flown in free. Those companies spend a fair amount of
money putting these things on.
Today was much nicer weather wise. Except I spent it studying for a
test tomorrow. Better get off of here and look over my notes again.

yes, the weather was definitely better today!
my 8th grader participated in a Math Counts competition as well, but it was
a few weeks ago, and it was at UT. they didn't have all those nice door
prizes either. maybe it was just the beginning level of that particular
mathcounts competition, and my daughter's school didn't advance to the next
level. ??

Yeah, the regional competition was a few weeks ago. The one
up here was at Baylor in Waco. No prizes at regional. I don't
know how many school districts participated in the region
Temple is in. Since Temple's three middle schools took the
top three places it may have been more from lack of competition
than the fact they are all good. I know Belton doesn't do
Mathcounts anymore and neither does Midway (which is Hewitt).

We don't get many thunderstorms where I live. It rarely rains at all,
and when it does, it's usually drizzle or light rain.
