What a delightful young man! |
My weekend started off irritatingly.
The cool coworker called me over to his cubicle. He opens with: "So,
did you see Return of the King?"
"Yes, I saw it."
"What did you think about it?"
"It was alright."
"What did you think of the ending?"
"I thought it dragged on a bit. A friend told me it was like that in
the book, to, though."
"I bet the ending was your favorite part. I bet you liked the hobbits
getting all faggy towards the end."
"Didn't one of them marry a woman?"
"Naw, he was gay. You like that *****."
Fortunately he received a call at that point, and I wandered back to
my cubicle.
He is young, he is stylish, he gets all the women, and his brain has
not grown a bit since Jr. High.
I did get to see the movie "Monster" with a "friend" this weekend. I
am not sure if she is much of a friend. I often get the impression she
would much rather not bother with me at all, but does not have the
courage to simply say so. I do question her taste in movies, though.
Everything she wants to see is always so dark and mean-spirited or
depressing (the movies we have seen together were: Monster's Ball, The
Pianist, and this one.)

sounds like jr. high all over again!!! you are right. his brain hasn't
grown at ALL since then.
i also think you might need a more chipper friend than the one you went to
the monster movie with. she sounds rather dreary!! ;-)

No, it was not a monster movie. It was a movie titled Monster. It is
about a down-on-her-luck prostitute finding love with a young lesbian
(played by Christina Ricci) and deciding the best way to pursue a
future with her would be to kill her customers. It is based on a true
story.
I am trying to convince her to see "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton." She
is quite resistant to teen romantic comedies.

Sounds like you need to stand up for yourself. I would ask your co-worker
next time he makes those comments: 'Are you hitting on me? Thanks but i dont
want to sleep with you"

I agree, next time this young man makes those kind of comments, just ask him
why he is so obsessed with gay men? Suggest to him that its ok for him to be
out of the closet.

Whatever happened to "not stooping to 'their' level?" These social
interactions are so very confusing and, as it seems, not worth my
while.
And again, like the last person who spent all his time being insulting
(who I eventually just stopped contacting,) this coworker has a hot
girlfriend, so he must be doing something I ought to emulate!
If only I could find true love at a night club.

I used to go along with the not stooping to their level thing, but then I
was cop even more insults and abuse because I would not defend myself.
I knew a man years ago, who every morning when I came to work would spend
the first 10 minutes of the day, putting me down, embarrassing me and
generally putting me on a downer first thing in the morning for all day.
This went on for months and I was getting to depressed and dreading going to
work.
Finally I went to work one day and Peter came up and started his crap and I
stood there and looked him square in the eye and said "Peter I am really
sorry that your self esteem and sense of worth is so low, that the only way
you can feel good about yourself is by attacking & insulting me. I am so
glad that I have been instrumental in restoring to you, your sense of self
worth and I am glad I am saving you the cost of the therapy you so obviously
need.
Every one around us burst out laughing, and Peter never ever spoke to me
insultingly first thing in the morning ever again, and funnily enough we
ended up becoming quite good friends after a while.
