What do you call in English... ? |
x-no-archive: yes
What do you call the pain you get in your muscles when you do some
heavy exercising after not having had any (exercise) for weeks?
I'm too lazy to get up and fetch my (big, heavy) dictionary.

If the muscle resists movement-- stiffness.
If the muscle moves easily with pain-- soreness.
If the muscle has pain without movement-- ache.

There is a technical/medical term for it DOMS
In colloquial English it really doesn't have a word dedicated to it... In My
native language it did.
I'm finding words here and there that have no direct, word for word
translation in English. Bummer.

it's not really something that has just one name ,
usually its just called muscle pain from exercise ,
some people may call it over exersion ,
others say , no pain , no gain

muscle soreness
cramp or charlyhorse if the pain is acute
And you would be called a "weekend warrior."

Hehe! This is my favourite. Especially if you're willing to fetch the
dictionary on weekends.
Is a charleyhorse always specific only to the leg? I've been getting
horrible foot cramps in my left foot in the middle of the night. I have to
get out of bed and force my foot into a walking position, then go soak my
foot in very hot water in the bathroom sink (good thing I'm limber enough to
easily get my foot up and into the sink) and massage it until the muscles
are willing to go back into non-screaming-agony mode, so I can go back to
sleep. I don't know if that's also a charleyhorse...? I've just been
calling it my buttheaded foot.

I think most people would call it "muscle pain".

Ache? My (close, small, light) Spanish-English dictionary translates that
as 'doler' and 'dolor' but I think the English term is more specific;
'dolor' is translated as 'pain, grief, sorrow', which is more severe than
'ache'.

Dictionaries aren't always useful. The Spanish term, meaning
specifically "muscle soreness and stiffness you get the next day after
having had heavy exercise", "agujetas", is translated as "stitch;
stiffness". "Stiffness", however, translates to Spanish as "rigidez",
and is a very general word (it doesn't necessarily involve ache for a
start); "stitch" is translated as "punzadas", which is a kind of sharp,
acute pain, but not necessarily a muscular pain nor related to exercise
(it's more an internal pain). "Cramp" and "charley horse" are translated
as "calambres", which is closer to "agujetas", but they can be caused by
a myriad reasons other than overexercising...
DOMS seems to be the closest translation to "agujetas".
Anyway it doesn't really matter anymore; they've subsided ;)
