Object: What do you do when your meds poop out?
Has anyone had any luck with VERY small doses, say, 5mg of Prozac? I know this
is beneath what any psy-Doc would prescribe, but I'm running out of options. I
have tried high doses and all they do is poop out in a few months. I am so sick
of this medication merry-go-round. I was wondering, has anyone heard of trying
a subthreshold dose of an SSRI? Might it have longer-lasting benefits? Feedback
would be appreciated.

If high doses of the drug no longer work, why would minute doses improve
its efficacy? You've lost me here.
It does happen at times that an antidepressant will work just dandy for
a while, then be less effective over time as the body acclimates to it.
When this happens, the usual courses of action are either to make a
trial of a different AD or to add a small dose of another AD to give the
first a boost.
What other meds have you taken? Have they all waned after a few months?
If so, my unprofessional guess is that depression might not be your
primary condition, but a symptom of another illness. Many physical and
psychiatric maladies include depression in their symptomologies.

In addition to what the other poster had said (which is true), smaller doses
might not give the brain such an overdose that it overacclimates, if this makes
any sense.
I don't know where I heard, but preliminary studies were also done that showed
just as much efficacy with some SSRIs on a quarter dose, but these weren't
admitted to the final round because the drug companies wanted to make more
profit (produce more pills).

I've taken Paxil and Zoloft for 2-3 years each, the latter I kept taking long
after it pooped out.

As I posted somewhere else, I'm starting to wonder the same thing. Loneliness
is my primary condition which no med seemed to help- always that ratchy feeling
of terror in the pit of my stomach.

Okay, that's understandable to me. I'd say it would apply in particular
to Prozac, which has a longer half-life than most other ADs and so might
accumulate more quickly and in larger quantities in one's system.

Both of these are also SSRIs. It's possible you might have better luck
either by trying a different type of AD or supplementing what you're
taking now with a small dose of another AD to beef up its therapeutic effects.
It sounds like a merry-go-round, to be sure. But it can certainly take
years before one finds a medication or combination of meds that works.
It did with me.

I'm guessing you're fairly aware of the need for physical checkups,
given the physical problems you've had in recent years. It's feasible
you might have a condition co-existing with your depression that the ADs
you've taken don't treat. Anxiety disorder and social phobia, off the
top of my head, are two such possibilities; there may be others.
Noting how your pdoc seems interested only in dispensing drugs and can't
be bothered with the other troubling aspects of your condition, say
farewell and find one who either will help you with that or will steer
you toward a therp who can. The doc is supposed to be there to serve
the client, not vice versa.

It's one of the main principles of homeopathy. You take a swimming pool
full of drinking water, show it an empty Prozac capsule, thrash it
around a bit, then sell the now medicinal water at £5 for a 10ml bottle.
I don't suppose 5mg of Prozac will work when more hasn't, but there are
some strange effects out there. Still, psychs start low and increase
dosage to get more effect, and it certainly seems to work that way.
Can you even get 5mg doses of vitamin P?

I think 20mg is the smallest dose they come in.

Vitamin P- is that another name for Prozac?

Jokingly, yes. It comes from Prozac being America's favourite AD. It's
never been that popular here in the UK.

True. But a pill splitter could divide that into four 5mg doses.

Does Prozac come in regular pills or only in the capsules? I've never
tried a pill splitter with capsules but I guess it could work as long as
one is careful with the capsule after it is split.
