What does it mean to "act your age"? |
Since I turned 30 back in December,I feel like I need to make major
changes in my life. When people ask how old I am,I'm kind of embaressed
to admit I'm 30.Sometimes I say I'm younger...I don't necessarilly
mean I want to have the same amount of work that most 30 year olds
have.I certainly don't me I want to be conventional in any way.(I
couldn't be even If I wanted to)But somwhow,being in my 30's now,I
feel like I really have to have new patterns, new habits...I guess I
just have to keep trying to be calm and relaxed...

Usually it means that someone doesn't like what you're doing and they try to
"shame" you into conforming. Don't worry about it. Think young. Act young.
Stay young.

Im only 23 .. but I don't know how a 23 year old is supposed to behave.
Nobody really knows how they're supposed to act. I doubt anyone out there
actually knows what being their age means. Only after the age is long
passed can one actually look back and see how their age and experience
contributed to their behaviour .. but not while you're going through it.
I mean, I look back to when I was 16, and all I see is an immature teenager
that fell in love with a person who treated him like trash. I wouldn't do
it now .. but it wasn't the age, but the experience or lack of experience
that influenced my behaviour.
So .. regardless of how you behave, someone out there will seem more, or
less mature .. because everyone "ages differently".

If a person has been abosed as a child, they thend to stay a child in
their head much longer or always, unless they really, really do some heavy
therapy about it, and even then, I don't know.
I do know, though, that all my life everyone else my age has seemed to me
much older, more mature, (although in my head when I would sit in my room and
contemplatte the wolrd and things I was in reality a very mature, deeply
meditative person), But anyway, everyone always seemed like twenty years
older than me, so I never fit in. In my twenties anyone my age always seemed
like my mother or father's age, and I felt like the child.
So, impossible to have friendships. When we'd go over to a couple's house
or something, I would end up in the kid's room playing with them cause I had
absolutely nothing to talk about with the adults. A lot of the times it was
cause they didn't have anything really interesting or deep to talk about. And
I couldn't stand talking about 'normal' grownup mundane things.
But, I had a hard time feeling older than my two oldest kids, and that
wasn't good for them; but when my youngest son came back and he was just
starting to be a teenager and I was in my forties, we would go bike riding
together and jumping curbs and racing and tree climbing and just simply act
like children. It was great!

I know what you mean.I was really in my own world alot as a
child, actually I'm still in my own world alot in many ways(though not
as much as I used to be.I think I've gotten at least somewhat better
socially).I definatly think that when your in your own world for so
much of the time for so many years, you develop much differently in
many ways then other people,so you feel that your not on the same
maturity level as others your age...It's hard to explain, but I
definatly related to ALOT of what you said here.

You're an adult... that's completely up to you.
I intend to act like a jackass and live my life the way I want to until
the day I die and anyone that has a problem with that can bite me. (I'm
six years older than you)

I read somewhere that individuals with ADD mature emotionaly about 25%
slower than they do physically. While the state of my life would be
unacceptable to a person of my physical age (28), I'm in about the right
place for a person of my emotional age (21). If I did the math wrong,
don't tell me. I like being 21.

I don't know about acting your age, but I can identify with an
increasingly larger number of interactions in my life where my age-group
has moved on. Leaves me feeling kind of dysfunctional in terms of peer
group interaction.
That's their problem though. "Why doesn't he have a girlfriend *yet*?"...
