Object: What you can say to your therapist if he tells you Cognitive Behavioral exercises won't work for you so don't even try them.
How do you know that CBT exercises won't work for me if I haven't even
tried them and you haven't taught me how to do them? Where is your
evidence that they won't work for me? CBT exercises have worked for
thousands if not millions of other people with depression, anxiety,
self-abuse issues, even schizophrenia and a long list of other
problems, what makes you think won't they work for me?
Even if I have a chemical imbalance like you say, does that mean that
you can't teach me how to do a simple exercise like this?
http://john.emmons.com/ret.html
Or that I can't learn to do it on my own?
Does having a chemical imbalance prevent me from reading and
understanding this article?

I thought a good therapist was supposed to believe in his client until
his client believes in himself. I thought that a good therapist was
supposed to be positive and supportive.
"You can't do it so don't even try" sounds a lot like what my parents
used to tell me as a child. If I thought I needed that kind of advice
I'd move back in with my parents. I could hear it on a daily basis
for free. I suspect that their negative attitude rubbed off on me and
that might be part of the reason I became depressed in the first
place.
I want to recover as quickly as possible. Depression is a very
dangerous illness and if CBT exercises might work for me then I want
to try to learn how to do them. Will you help me learn how to do
these exercises or should I find another therapist to help me?

Holy cow!! Is that what a therapist said to you?! If that's the case
he should have his license taken away! I think you should find
another therapist. I have been through CBT myself, and I think the
process is very important, time to think, and the dynamics of a group
setting, that I couldn't impart to you here on this site by telling
you what I learned. I hope you will continue on in seeking help and
treatment, and find a therapist who supports you and who you trust.
If you can't trust your therapist then you need a new one, in my
opinion. Best of luck to you.
