What's the tiredness about? |
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone's got any ideas. I am so tired, I get
enough rest, exercise, I'm not drinking except for rather a lot of
coffee; my appetite is poor but I am eating; a short time ago I was
diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. I was extrememly tired.
That is cleared up now but much of the tiredness remains. I've been
like this for weeks and weeks. I don't think it's depression; my
anxiety levels have increased slightly but not greatly. I've ordered
some blood tests but I'm not optimistic they will reveal anything
physical.
I can only put the tiredness down to "stress". But I can't go on like
this. I need to earn a living.
Any ideas on what could be causing this?
Cheers,
Michelle

i'm wondering about fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. i have
fibromyalgia and it began with an extremely bad urinary tract infection.
when it was over, i never really recovered physically. and new symptoms
began happening every week.
good luck.

How much coffee? Drinking too much coffee can irregulate sleeping
habits, which brings on exhaustion, and sometimes "withdrawal
symptoms".

Well I did wonder. Too much. I'm not sleeping all that
regularly .... but what I miss at night I make up for in the daytime.
I don't know maybe 6 mugs of coffee a day.

A few thoughts... the coffee aside, there's a big difference between
getting sleep and getting deep sleep. If you're not sleeping much at
night, you're probably not getting rejuvenating sleep, even if
technically you're getting enough hours.
Second thought... have you been checked for anemia, and/or do you take
an iron supplement? Many, many women tend to be iron-deficient, and
that can cause fatigue.
Third thing, but this is the one that I have no idea what to do about.
Nothing wears me out like stress, particularly emotional stress.
Everything else could be lined up just fine, and you could still be
absolutely exhausted if you're stressed/emotionally drained enough.

I've had some blood tests done; I get the results next week.

As far as I know, the best remedy for emotional stress is rest.

No, the best remedy for emotional stress is to remove the things that
cause you to be stressed OR learn to deal with the stress better.
Anything else is pretty much a band-aid, not a remedy, I think.

I would have to agree with you. If it stresses you the remedy is to find
out why? If you can resolve it after you find out why, then eliminate the
stress if you can, or like Nina said, learn to deal/handle it in a different
way.
i.e. my job can be waaaaaaaaaaaay stressful, but I don't take it home with
me. My family stresses me horribly, so I moved away. Riding with fast
aggressive drivers almost puts me in a panic attack, so I drive my own
vehicle to avoid being put in that situation. There are lots of stress
factors, you've just got to work at it to figure out how to work "around" or
"with" them.

If only it were that simple.
Grieving is stressful but there's no way round that, you just have to
do it. Somehow. I have a lot of background stress that I can't go
into here. These things too, I can do nothing about. If it was
anxiety, I would know what to do - face the situation. Some of the
stresses in my life are too sublte to work through. I have the CAS in
my life. They've been here for awhile and they're not going away
soon. Nothing I can do about it 'cept keep jumping through their
hoops. I have a lot of doctors' appointments which I cannot avoid
because they are essential to my maintaining health - and they're
stressful.
Some things that have me stressed have passed. I need to let go of
the past. Deaths, bad relationships, all in the recent past. I mean,
how well does anybody deal with the stress brought on by a
bereavement? It's all too easy to say, oh just deal with it.
I've made another "to do" list and I got through half of it today, and
I feel better for it. Yesterday I did nothing but rest, and sleep,
and I slept at night too, and I think it's because I got that rest
that I feel almost normal today. Thank God!!
Easter was stressful, and that's gone now. Whew. My birthday, also
in the recent past. Got threatened to have my electricity cut off -
also in the past (I paid the bill). Money stresses. Vicious circle
because when I don't have money, I'm stressed, and when I'm stressed I
can't earn money. So I just have to go easy on myself and say, OK,
you have a couple of days off, and when you're feeling better, then go
back to work (I work for myself). It's stessful getting money. I
haven't done my taxes, therefore I'm not receiving child benefit or
GST. So I need to get that done, and I'm stressing because I can't
find proof of rent, etc. so I'm going through all my stuff trying to
find everything and anything I need to do my taxes.
My social worker convinced me that I can get orphan's benefit for my
son, and today I find out after all, no, I can't. Try Britain. So
you see, it's stressful doing the stuff I need to do, to get money, to
get my passport and my son his passport, etc. Guess what, depression
is a stress-related illness. I'm just happy not to be depressed. I'm
happy to be stressed. Yeah.
I've got 2 other relationships I'm working on, to combat my
loneliness. All this stuff is going on in my head .......... worry
about my son. And don't tell me not to worry, because that is what
mothers do. Been driving me crazy for nearly 5 years trying to get
him some help.......... I guess the attitude to take is just do what I
can. If only the doctors had the same attitude. No. They just want
to sweep it under the carpet ............. just like his teachers in
school when I was telling them I think my son is dyslexic. Did they
listen? Hell no. And now, guess what? He's been diagnosed with
dyslexia. Told you so!! So now, just like when I had to accept the
teachers were going to do jack all, and I had to learn to sit back and
watch his grade average sink from a B to a D, now I have to watch him
slip further and further into depression and listen to the doctors say
he's not depressed, he's not anxious. OK. He won't commit suicide.
Oh, you know that for sure? Ok then, I'll stop worrying then.
I guess I'm just venting. I think it helps to write and get it out.
Thanks for listening.

It's most likely a combination of a number of things. Might want
to cut back on the coffee, and more importantly think about what
you eat. I could forget about eating for three days or more, and
go into a state of not really being able to do anything. I'm actually
getting a feeling of hunger back, also taking vitimins now. Realize
too that too much sleep will (well for me anyway) might make you
tired.
