Object: Why Are They Still Looking For Those Climbers?
You pays your money and you takes your chances. Why risk the lives of
rescue personnel to try and find a couple of boobs who wanted to climb a
mountain?
Considering the number of rescuers who are killed doing their jobs, it just
isn't worth it in this circumstance. Not to rescue people who claimed to be
highly experienced and were performing an inherently dangerous recreational
activity.
Save the rescue personnel for people who get into trouble through no fault
of their own. That guy who recently died trying to hike off and find help
for his wife and son wasn't seeking an adrenalin rush.
I like Dennis Miller's idea. If they find these guys, they should just
shout down from the helicopter "Hey assholes, Chuck Darwin says hi!" and
then fly away.

in BC now in some circumstances ,
the rescued pays the bill for the rescue ,
this has cut the rescuing down by about 50 %

If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus
population. Merry Christmas.
I'm also in favour of medical treatment for cigarette smokers and people who
eat too much sugar, salt and fat. We's have more resources to save the
lives of people who didn't abuse their bodies that way if we wrote those
people off, but I want to help them anyway.
My ex-husband's brother died on Mt. Hood in an accident that was one of
those high-profile news stories. I knew some of the rescue/recovery
personnel. Two of them were twins that were sons of my grandmother's best
friend; I'd known them all my life. They wanted to be there and were glad
to help other climbers who loved the mountain the way they did. They don't
consider people who climb mountains to be "boobs".

I'm glad you are in favor of medical treatment for cigarette smokers and
people who eat too much sugar, salt and fat. If we can pay for medical
insurance, we have every right to do so.
Medical insurance, in American at least, is progressive however and doesn't
take into account one's lifestyle choices. Life insurance, on the other
hand, does. I pay more for my $250,000 policy than my wife does because I'm
a smoker. Buddha pays very little for his $50,000 policy because he doesn't
do anything more dangerous than trying to walk in a straight line.
Do mountain climbers have to pay for the cost of their rescue because they
intentionally placed themselves in harms way for the sake of entertainment?
Nascar pays for ambulance service to be on site. So does the NFL. So do The
Mythbusters for that matter.

Good for them.

Hiya Bunny! Here's a thread from a
climbers' website as the story unfolded:
http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.html?topic_id=292352
Many of the posters are also in
volunteer rescue groups in their
geographies, including the Pacific
Northwest. It's a long thread but, imo,
gives a really good view into the minds
of climbing "boobs" and those prepared
to help them.

Cascade Climbers and Telemarktalk have extensive threads on the current
situation. Weather window closes tomorrow with freezing rain here in the
foothills and snow at 5000'. Hope they find the other two climbers, but
time is unfortunatley running out.

Thanks, pjl. I've followed it on
cascadeclimbers.com but haven't heard of
the other website. I'll look for it.
I've kinda given up hope, to tell the
truth. The helicopters have been up
there buzzing around and I think someone
in a snow cave would likely have heard
the ruckus and come out. Too bad, too sad.

They are not boobs, idiots or whatever one may wish to call them. Many
of the rescuers are volunteers who are experienced climbers from PMR and
CMR. Climbers helping out other climbers in need.
The favourite last year was a boarder who became infamous for opening up
the bergshrund on Hood's southside, guy was lucky. It's a cool place to
hangout in the spring sunshine.

They are highly expereinced. One of the party members was injured and
then the weather window closed. Man did it ever close. There are risks
with mountaineering. If you are stupid about it, then it becomes
dangerous and these guys were not stupid. They did everything right from
leaving notes at the Ranger station down in Hood River and at the Tilly
Jane Snopark in the vehicle. Unfortunately ***** happens.

Save the rescue personnel for people who get into trouble through no fault
of their own. That guy who recently died trying to hike off and find help
for his wife and son wasn't seeking an adrenalin rush.

Kim made several mistakes through ignorance which cost him his life.

Apparently it is the last ***** one of the men will ever experience...

But at least he went out with a purpose other than to find an adrenalin
rush. He was trying to save the lives of his wife and child. A much better
way to die in my opinion.

There now seems to be a controversy in the handling of the rescue
operation, but as sad as it was it started with Kim.

I like Dennis Miller's idea. If they find these guys, they should just
shout down from the helicopter "Hey assholes, Chuck Darwin says hi!" and

I hate the constant "non-updates" when there is no new information
(not that I really care anyway). Today, they broke into CNN for a
live press release that informed the world that the dead climbers body
had been succesfully retrieved from the mountain.

We interrupt this broadcast for an important announcement: Generalissimo
Francisco Franco is still dead.
