Windburn, sunburn and sore all over. |
Went to see my folks up at their "home" camp near Yosemite.
Froze all night, and the air bed had a slow leak in it.. Do you have
any idea how hard it is to get out of an airbed that is only half
full? When you sit up and your butt sinks to the ground below? You
wake up in full body cramps cuz it was wayyy to soft? and waaayyy too
COLD?
ah well.
She made us wake up at 9 am. UGH.
No one can defiantly remain asleep when she wants you to get up.
So we spent most of the day in Yosemite valley. Ended it with a
sunset view off of Glacier point. Unfortunately, Yosemite Falls was
BONE DRY, and Bridal Veil falls were.. Flower Girl Veil falls.
Vernal and Nevada falls definitely far far less than their spring
volume. Merced river just a creek. Lovely weather though. And not
crammed full of cars and people either.
I'm sore.
I'm so sore, I can now hardly move (more on that in another post).
but it was a very fun day.
We're going back next weekend. Then my folks will be taking off for
Arizona.

Yep, we're in a drought. I was in Yosemite once when there had been such heavy
snowfall that in June the entire valley was flooded. The falls were great. I'm
surprized that it wasn't more crowded. The weather has been beautiful and it's
a three day weekend. Did you harass the park service? Please do!

Figures. I just remembered that some one I needed to call may be doing an
annual art retreat up there. I guess it gets me out of that.

Figures.
We wondered how could there be so little litter when we never saw
anyone cleaning it up. I can't believe that a *vast majority* of
visitors care...

wombn,
I'm SO jealous!
Some friends and I did a hike up to Breeze Lake (10,000 ft.) a long time
ago. It was a top-of-the-world experience.
Thanks for the report!

wow. All of us, except Thor, had trouble up at Glacier point (7,000
ft).
Many many many years ago... '87, I think, I went with dad, my uncle,
and my (first) husband on a week long backpacking trip in the
backcountry. Danged but I can't remember the name of the summit
(can't see it from Glacier Point though). It was so incredible. I
wish I could do that again.
Thanks for the report!
well, hurry-up and get back up there, Silly! :-)

A memory of hiking down the ridge to the lake and at water's edge,
sticking my head into it and drinking. Then there was this giant boulder
about 30 feet offshore...
NOT TOO BRIGHT IDEA: I stripped down to my underwear and dove in. It was
freezing cold! I swam out to the boulder and climbed onto it. My body was
one giant goosebump!!! I waved to my buddies on shore, then it dawned on
me that I'd have to jump back in to get ashore.
We pitched camp and for three days the mosquitoes (by the thousands) kept
us at bay. It was awful, but memorable.

you didn't catch Giardia (sp)? We had to filter the water with a
handpumped filter. Took half an hour twice a day to get enough water
for all 4 of us.

oh maaannnnnn... Thor said he was tempted to dip into the clear pools

ugh. We didn't have skeeters on that trip. But one up near Tahoe
instead... *shudder*

Whatever that is, nope. I think the rock surrounding the lake was
limestone. I reasoned that the rainfall was clean. It tasted OK, no
matter.

um..... hm. It's some kind of infection, either viral or bacterial,
I dunno... It's deposited into the water systems all over California
mountains by wildlife. It's symptoms come on about 3 weeks later and
are like a very bad flu. No unfiltered California mountain water
should be drunk (or So They Say).... apparently, you either got truly
clean water or were able to fight it off.
wait a minnut... this link has better data:
http://health.yahoo.com/health/ency/adam/000288
I did a yahoo search, too, (giardia california) but just wasn't in the
mood to try to sift out the best sources, but it got 27,000 hits.

hee. I dunno..... He's jumped into the American River here when he's
been overheated and from what I gathered it was quite a shock..
We're going back next weekend because 1) he wanted to cut this visit
short due to business reasons and 2) because he wants to do next
Sunday's long run in such beautiful surroundings (he's aiming for
*possibly* being in a marathon at some point in time)
