windows is *****, here's why |
added new hard-drive, nothing changed, just added, had to re-install
everything.
the drive is EXACTLY the same as the other one in their, thus doubling
my storage.
windows couldn't find the driver for it, windows couldn't work out what
the bios was telling it, windows insisted a file wasn't their.
i can understand that kind of thing with LINUX, but windows, bad show...

Ok, at the risk of being punched twice, did you replace existing C: drive
with another or add an additional drive to complement C:?
Ouch..............cringe!

i'm using the aforementioned computer to post.
windows gave me no option to boot, recovery failed as XP STILL DOES NOT
HAVE ATA DRIVERS.... and I couldn't boot up to make another one....

my main grievance is with Microsoft's continual diatribe about being the
greatest and best, when at the end of the day it has a time-absorbent
curve directly proportional to Linux... the only way is to ignore the
instructions (which are never clear in comparison to operational use) as
nine times out of ten, something will come up that isn't covered and
you'll need a spare machine to spend 2 hours on the web researching...

It might need to be reformated. Check your cables to be sure the right ones
are hooked up and secure. Also go into the system bios and make sure its
being recognized there, and set the boot sequence to boot just after the
first hard drive.
Another idea is to have a dual boot system with Linux and Windows, Linux
being on the new drive, with a possible extra partition for storage. You can
usually get Linux ordered online on ebay or at their website. One suggestion
would be the Mandrake version.

I've never had that kind of issue with Linux... but, yea, Windows doesn't
like change.

It's a bugger for those of us who make hardware changes. I took out some
memory, and got told that Windows wouldn't run till I activated it. Not
re-activated it, but activated it. It thought I'd installed it on a new
machine!
Once I've sorted my broken PC, I'll have to put together another from
spare parts to try out Linux. Or maybe dual boot it. How does Linux like
SATA drives?

If you've been adding a SATA drive you need to provide a third party
driver for the SATA controller.
On a highpoint controller for instance:
http://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA/bios.htm
Or the via 8237 chipset:
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1180&SubCatID=143
Or the Intel Application Accelerator/IAA RAID (that's what you get when
marketing names the drivers)
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=663&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go%21
You need these installed on the system before attaching the drives,
ideally. It really shouldn't matter after a reboot though.
I wasn't standing over you should while you did things so I can't say
for certain.

I've added, removed, augmented and co-existed with a LOT of drives in
Windows. I don't know what you did to cause such FUBAR. You say you had
ATA driver problems...are you running an nForce based motherboard? The
nvidia ATA drivers can be troublesome therefore I don't use them. (Oh
no, an undetectable 5% performance loss!)
