This sucks. I need light, LIGHT dam it. And freakin flowers. My
screen saver has Summer pictures I took. I lean in real close to the
screen and get a rush. Then in 2 weeks, one is supposed to be santa
happy. "visit our open house"....Only if you visit my open brain. My
non depressive brother keeps reminding me of all the great shows on for
the holiday. It's all humbug! The sun is trying to melt an icicle. I
am going to run naked through the snowdrifts. Light dam it,
Light!...roll film....and Action!

Laugh! Uh...yeah...if you plan to run naked through snowdrifts you had
better be taking pictures. I get the time of year thing. Seems that way
for a lot of us. You should try a SAD light and see it that helps any. :)

I've seen blue desk lamps that are around $30 - $40 or so. It might be
a nice change, I've been thinking of getting one. There are other light
boxes for this purpose that are more expensive, though it might be
possible to get insurance to pay for part of it. You could also just
get a regular lamp with a blue light-bulb, and a transparent shade.

The colour doesn't matter, it's the quantity. White light (sun
temperature) is easier to use, perhaps, and useful for photography. The
amount of light, concentrated in a close source (distance from the light
is very important - twice as far away means only a quarter of the light)
is what you need, and that's why light boxes cost more money. To make
the equivalent, you'd need a lot of short, high-output fluorescent
tubes.

Sunlight is around 5800k and Fluorescent tubes wander between
4000k to 4500k. Tungsten or light bulbs from about 2800k to
3200k. Low energy lights peak at around 2700k. Specially treated
tubes can be made to give 5600k to 5800k and they are used in
blue screen lighting, film work and SAD lights. I don't know
about SAD lights but in 5 years I learnt a lot about blue screen
lighting.

I forgot to mention, sit about 50cm from lamp (been in Germany too long
don't know what that is in inches)
the less lux, the farther you are from lamp, the longer you need to sit.
10,000 lux + 50cm = 1/2 hour
7,000 lux + further = 1 hour or more
there are 5,000 lux but you would have to sit there even longer.
10,000 is recommended as being most beneficial

also it helps if you live below the 40th parallel. when I found this
out, I moved from RI to NC which helped tremendously. in RI I couldn't
get out of bed in January.
now ask me why I went and did something totally silly like move to
Germany?

is a blue lamp the same? isn't that for growing plants? or weed?
minimum requirement is a 7,000 lux lamp (available through Tchibo if you
live in UK/Germany) for one hour within half hour of rising.
better is 10,000 lux lamp for 1/2 hour.
but this MUST be done within half hour of waking in order to kick-start
your melatonin. sometimes it helps to have a booster light bath (that's
how Tchibo terms it) in the afternoon.
10,000 lux simulates dawn on the morning of the spring equinox.
the light must shine into your retina but do not look directly into
lamp.
therapy lamps have gotten cheaper over the years. when I bought mine
about 8 years ago, the only place online was a Canadian company and cost
about $200 CD. I had to have it shipped to Germany. now everybody
seems to have them.
I have two lamps. one by monitor, one in cellar in my hobby room.

10,000 lux therapy lamp facing monitor. works for me.
sometimes.
I really hate summer solstice, from that point until winter solstice, I
lose just about a minute a day of sunlight. that's if the sun ever
shown here.
I think my cat is also depressive, he sleeps all day.

A read that it is normal for a cat to sleep 18 hours a day. I suppose if
it's natural they need it, but it sounded awful boring to me.

Further evidence that I was a cat in a former life. I love sleep. Often
times more than being awake.

sometimes we spend quality time together. I nap on the sofa and he
curls up scrunched up behind my ankles. that's love when he moves over
to allow room for me.
