Apparently I like to minimise the bad stuff by laughing at it. At least,
that's what my therapist says.

The opinions given above may be mine. They might also
just be what I feel like saying right now, okay?

Do you see anything wrong with that? Does the therapist? And why?
Curious.

I'm just wondering why she said it. Maybe it makes it harder for her to
interpret me.

I agree. It makes it harder for her to interpret you, but it almost seems
as if it makes her uncomfortable, which surprised me. However, I don't
think that it's a bad thing. I think it can be wonderful coping mechanism
if used the right way. I was more curious about the therapist's reaction to
it. It almost seems as if she wasn't sure how to handle it which caught me
off guard. Surely she has seen such a thing before in a patient. Of
course, she's probably never seen a wit quite like yours. You're unique
that way. :-)

How long have you been seeing this person? One
would think this trait had been noticed before.

It's the first time she's commented. Today was the second time ('hiding
behind the humour'). We got to some serious stuff about me with no
humour, so maybe she was right. It's given me something to think about -
I seem to hide things from myself, too. I think I'm in a lot worse shape
than I thought.

I had a friend last weekend ask me about how my spouse were handling a
difficult situation we are in; apparently, she's worried about us and
said as much. I quickly laughed the whole thing off (it wasn't really
a laughing matter)...then had to force myself to take what she said
seriously and give her at least some kind of serious answer. Even
then, I couldn't look her in the face while I responded....
I don't know if I hide things from myself; if they are hidden, I guess
I wouldn't know. I do know I catch myself with tears breaking through
on stuff I tell people I'm handling fine.
Best wishes.

I mentioned it to my counsellor. He said my delivery was so dry he had
often had to ask if I was joking, and only knew when I laughed. I think
I need to work on some wet laughs.

Alan, please laugh, laugh, laugh all you can!!! I always think
that if you can't laugh at life, at least sometimes, <there-is-just-no-
way-of-going-on...> literally... the world would be pretty bleak and
unbearable without laughter... bleaker, then it already is, at any
rate...

It actually sounds pretty healthy, to me.

I wasn't criticizing, I meant that's my impression of British people -
you know, the stiff upper lip and subtle humor thing. Like in the
middle of the DDay landings, once some of the Brits got ashore, they sat
down and made tea.
