Is my RAM causing DW 8 to crash? |
Hey all, I've had some RAM in my mac (running Leopard) for quite some time and
DW (and other apps) crash fairly frequently and I'm just wondering if my RAM is
too mis-matched to work properly.
Here's the RAM specs from a recent crash report:
Memory Module: DIMM0/J6700, 512 MB, DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-4200U-444
Memory Module: DIMM1/J6800, 512 MB, DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-4200U-444
Memory Module: DIMM2/J6900, 1 GB, DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-3200U-288
Memory Module: DIMM3/J7000, 1 GB, DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-3200U-288
Never even thought about this being an issue until I actually LOOKED at a
crash report.
Thanks!

try swithching

I would keep the ram in your backyard, securely tethered.
This will surely solve your problem.
To discourage his destructive tendencies, I would consider geting him a ewe.
I find it disconcerting that he thinks he is a leopard, perhaps an
exorcism is in order

Thanks for the replies everyone (and the fun side banter)!
I've run the system check of the RAM and it all checks out. I may have to give
a try with removing the sticks and trying them in different slots.
And if it comes to it, I may have to barbecue it and buy new, less ornery RAM,
plus tethering it in the backyard would only cause my neighbors even more
reasons to question my sanity...

Ram checks are next to useless unless it is an obvious failure.
Swapping out is a SURE check.

If you do play about with the sticks, don't forget to discharge any
static electricity you may have built up first... sit down in front of
your computer ready to work, and touch some metal work that is connected
to ground. I usually leave my PC plugged into the wall, then touch the
metal of the case, then unplug the power. Or, go out and buy a static
discharge wrist strap, but in all my years or computing I have never
damaged anything using my method.

As a test, take out the 2 x 512Mb and see if it still crashes. Then,
even if it doesn't, take out the 2 x 1Gb and see what happens. If it
doesn't make any difference then you may still have memory problems, so
try it with one at a time. If you still have problems, try them in
different sockets, as it could be the location thats at fault. This
would be my last move, as you have 4 sticks that could go in 4 different
locations...thats 16 variations, lots of reboots and testing.
On the PC you used to be able to get software that tested your PC from a
floppy disc, I would imagine something must exist for the Mac, since its
such a fantastic platform ;)

Yes, indeed, there's a "hardware test" included on the system install disk
that tests, among other things, the installed RAM.
If the OP is interested in running the hardware test, he can run it by
booting from the system install disk.

I know next to nothing about Mac memory, but I added 1 GB of memory to
my MacBook Pro recently. I asked some questions about upgrading memory
on the Mac forum, and someone told me mixing memory is no big deal. It's
preferable to have identical memory chips/bars, whatever they're called,
but it's more important to have plenty of memory, even if it means mixing.
Then again, we were talking about mixing memory chips made by different
companies; mixing 1 GB with 512 MB might conceivably be a different story.
