No, no. I was referring to other qualities such as quality of courses,
quality of professors, process of selection, money devoted to research,
campus, facilities, etc...
For those and many other reasons anybody would agree that American
Universities win 6-0.

What about the idea that Australian universities are better than either
North-American (inc Canada) or European ? I'd propose this on the basis

If our colleges and universities are so bad compared to Europe and other
nations, then why the hell do they all want to come here for higher
education?
A future senator has already started the push that the ONLY students who

Europeans think their colleges and universities are so much better. Fine,

Number of Foreign Students Coming to Study in America Diminishes in Wake
of 9/11, Says StudyAbroad.com Expert
CHESTER, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 9, 2004--
Weeklong Global Celebration Hopes to Reverse the Trend
A dramatic decrease in the number of foreign graduate students coming to
the U.S. following 9/11 threatens the future of higher education and
undermines cultural understanding, says an expert on international
education.
Mark Shay, CEO of StudyAbroad.com, an enterprise promoting international
education, calls for reforms to forge a more culturally aware and
tolerant world in recognition of International Education Week (IEW),
November 15-19.
To commemorate the fifth year of IEW, schools, embassies, and
communities from 86 countries will hold activities celebrating the
benefits of internationalization. The event is sponsored by the
Department of State and the Department of Education.
While American study abroad applications increased 42 percent following
9/11, according to the Institute of International Education, enrollment
in American universities by foreign students has steadily declined. The
Council of Graduate Schools cites an 18 percent decrease in admissions
of foreign graduate students since last year. IEW and similar events
could reverse those numbers.
Shay hopes his company's StudyAbroad.com website can further stimulate
the study abroad market. "The creation of more, not less, global
awareness is necessary," he says. "Knowledge and experience are vital in
gaining and promoting international understanding. Studying abroad
introduces a new environment through which knowledge can be gained in a
real-time setting. These experiences prepare individuals to thrive in a
global community."
Secretary of State Colin Powell commended IEW, saying, "Celebrated
worldwide, IEW provides an opportunity to highlight the benefits of
international education and exchange; to express appreciation for
students and scholars who study and teach here; and to commend the
millions of people who build and strengthen bridges of international
understanding by organizing and participating in exchange programs."

My point and what the future senator is also probably referring to is the
simple fact that many of these foreign students come here, go to our
colleges, graduate in the upper 1/3 of the class, then land all the best
paying jobs! (taking away good jobs from American citizens).
Let them come to the United States and become a citizen first, then they
can attend our colleges.
This may sound a bit racist or whatever, but its time American supports
their own first and foremost.

The criterion used by TL is "better = offering athletic
scholarships to soccer players".
No, no. I was referring to other qualities such as quality of
courses, quality of professors, process of selection, money devoted
to research, campus, facilities, etc...
For those and many other reasons anybody would agree that American
Universities win 6-0.
Cheers to all my Italian Gnawers (Rosiconi)
What???
For money devoted to research and resources yes, but for learning,
no.
Politecnico di Torino shits over any American Uni.
ROTFL!!!
Better than MIT?! Better than CalTech?! Better than Cal-Berkeley?!
Better than Stanford?! Better than Texas?! Better than Michigan?!
Better than Ohio State?!
ROTFLMAO!!!
DON'T BE RIDICOLOUS!
Also many other Medical Unis in Italy are better.
AHAHAHAHAHAHA
Better than UCLA?! Better than Harvard?! Better than U of Chicago?!
If so, is that why the richest people in Europe ALWAYS come to the US
to get major
surgeries done?
YOU ARE FULL OF *****!!!
Many Italian go to the US after they graduate from Italian
universities.
And that proves my point: AMERICA is BETTER!

Sorry Barrett, I have to disagree: the reason of the success of the
'ANGLOSAXON UNIVERSITY SYSTEM' is that exporting (a certain kind of)
italian students to the american universities is the quickest way to
increase the IQ in both the countries.

Fewer foreign students at U.S. grad schools
Associated Press
A new survey indicates the number of foreign graduate students
enrolling for the first time at U.S. universities is down 6 percent
this year -- the third straight decline after a decade of growth.
Educators worry that the trend is eroding America's position as the
world's leader in higher education.
The fall wasn't as steep as feared, considering applications last
spring were down 32 percent.
But the results of the survey, of 122 member institutions by the
Council of Graduate Schools, still are alarming to educators. U.S.
universities are highly dependent on foreign students for teaching and
research help, particularly in the sciences and in engineering, a
field in which foreigners make up 50 percent of graduate enrollment.
``If you took them out of the system, we would not be at the same
point we are in many of our endeavors -- scientific endeavors and also
economic growth,'' said Heath Brown, the council's director of
research and policy analysis.
More than two-thirds of schools reported some decline. The steepest
drops were in business (12 percent), sciences/agriculture (10 percent)
and engineering (8 percent).
Experts believe that a major factor is the difficulty -- or at least
perceived difficulty -- of getting student visas under tightened U.S.
immigration policies. Other factors include anti-Americanism abroad,
and increasing competitiveness from universities in India, China and
Europe.
http://www.mcgilltribune.com/news/2004/11/09/News/Liberal.Professors.Escape.To.Mcgill-797568.shtml
US President George W. Bush's re-election last Tuesday could be a
blessing in disguise for McGill's academic recruitment efforts.
Several US-based professors had threatened to head north of the border
if Bush were to win, leading to speculation on the part of some McGill
administrators that the pool of talent may grow this year.
"I would not be surprised if certain people got fed up if Bush wins,"
Dean of Arts John A. Hall said prior to the election.
The number of American professors McGill hires has risen dramatically
each year since 2001. In 2000, 8.5 per cent of new hires were US
citizens. This year, 22 per cent of incoming professors are American.
Altogether, 47 American professors were hired from 2002 to 2003,
compared to only 18 from 2000 to 2001.
News reports have forecast the possibility of an influx of
self-proclaimed "political refugees" from the US. As the Toronto-based
War Resisters Support Campaign says, "The continuing Iraq war probably
means that more US war resisters will seek refuge in Canada."
Michael Kergin, Canadian ambassador to the US, denied that such mass
immigration is taking place, however.
"We've seen no lineups beyond the usual requests for visas to visit
Canada," he said in Ottawa Thursday.
Still, political pressures have already convinced several professors
to leave better-paying jobs in the US in favour of McGill.
Chief among them is Islamic Studies professor Rula Abisaab. Abisaab,
an American citizen, Yale University graduate and former professor at
the University of Akron, Ohio, never imagined leaving the US until her
son began to feel uncomfortable in school owing to his Lebanese
background.
"You had to be on the defensive every time you critiqued the
government," she said. "It became quite suffocating."
Her experiences led her to the conclusion that she could not raise her
children in a country where the main civil institutions are restricted
from criticizing the government. In 2002, Abisaab's name was added to
a since-withdrawn blacklist of "terrorist apologists" at Daniel
Pipes's www.campus-watch.org, a project which, according to its
mission statement, "reviews and critiques Middle East studies in North
America, with an aim to improving them."
"I feel ashamed because I did not deserve [the blacklisting]," Abisaab
said.
Pipes is Bush's appointee to the US Institute of Peace and the
co-author of the International Studies in Higher Education Act, which
directs the Secretary of Education to investigate "communities that
include speakers of languages that are critical to the national
security of the United States."
Islamic Studies professor Michelle Hartman also left the US partly for
political reasons. She noted that teaching in any politically
sensitive field is becoming more difficult under the present
administration and within the current political environment.
"The atmosphere on the campus I was teaching on after September 11,
2001, was extremely racist," she said, adding that working in Canada
has made her life easier.
Nevertheless, Hartman is skeptical that Bush's win will lead to a
dramatic exodus to Canada, citing better academic staff pay at
American universities.
"People talk about leaving the US all the time, but whether that will
happen [is doubtful]," she said.
Todd Zickler, professor of electrical engineering at Harvard
University, is one professor who will almost certainly remain in the
US despite his disagreement with many government policies. However, he
observed that his attitude could change.
"Once I have children who reach school age, it will be difficult to
stay here," he said.
Other professors have shown a greater willingness to emigrate to
Canada, though many are reluctant to go on the record for fear of
academic ostracism, loss of job security, or green card ineligibility.
For Ray Fisman, an economics professor at Columbia University, Bush's
victory has increased his interest in relocating to Canada.
"I'll think a little bit harder about it in light of recent events,"
he said. "It is a kinder, gentler society."
Fisman also said, however, that McGill cannot match Columbia's
resources.
Several professors did mention friends in US academia actively
pursuing jobs in Canada, especially in political fields, while all
indicated the present unavailability of well-paying positions. But
with McGill's drive to hire 100 new professors over the next two
years, appointments may become easier to acquire for those seeking
residency outside the US.
