Subject: Anyone have any ideas on this one?
Jim,
I'm here in El Paso, TX, doing 12 hour ER shifts. In the few moments I
can arrange, I have gone to the University of Texas, El Paso library,
which is awesome! It has a ton of materials on the founding of the
Constitution and related subjects.
Anyway, two nights ago I stumbled - by blind luck - upon a book that
had a great quote of Luther Martin, wherein he decried the fact that
there was no mention of God in the Constitution. I dutifully wrote the
quote down in my computer, along with the citation. Unfortunately, a
librarian was helping me with something, and -somehow - it seems that
I didn't properly save what I wrote. Worse, I haven't been able to
locate the book - the name of which I cannot recall.
So, the question is, do you know what I'm referring to? It isn't his
stuff on the test oath clause. (Or, if it is, it isn't the stuff
usually quoted on that subject.) It was short and sweet, speaking more
precisely on the entire absence of God in the Constitution.
Also, I just read tonight that the "Whereas the government of the
United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion"
phrase in the Treaty of Tripoli was actually the first sentence of the
proposal for the treaty, as initially submitted y George Washington in
1796. D you know anything about that?
Thanks, as always.
- Mike
PS - how are you (and your eyes) doing?
