A live-in caretaker was ordered held in lieu of $800,000 bail Saturday
after being charged in the death of a baby on the city's South Side.
Barbara Hardwell, 52, was arrested Thursday and charged with
first-degree murder in the death of 1-year-old Kylie Humphrey of the
7100 block of South Rockwell Street.
Prosecutors said in Bond Court that Hardwell also was caring for her two
11-year-old daughters and Kylie's 3-year-old cousin at the time of the
Aug. 4 incident. One of Hardwell's daughters later told police that the
baby had made her mother "mad" and that Hardwell shook the baby, said
Assistant Cook County State's Atty. Sanju Oommen.
Hardwell's other daughter told police that her mother had thrown the
baby on the floor, picked her up and threw her down again, Oommen said.
Kylie was left in Hardwell's care at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 4. A relative of
Kylie's arrived at the home at 4:15 p.m. and was denied entry,
prosecutors said. When she entered, however, she saw blood on Hardwell's
shirt and water on the floor, authorities said. Kylie was on a bed,
lying on her belly with an arm hanging off the bed and her eyes
partially open, Oommen said.
Later, a neighbor stopped by twice and saw Kylie on the bed. No one
contacted authorities until Hardwell called Kylie's mother at 10 p.m.
and reported that the child was bleeding from the mouth and nose.
Paramedics were called to the scene. The baby was taken to Holy Cross
Hospital then transferred to the University of Chicago Comer Children's
Hospital, where she was pronounced dead Aug. 5.
Hardwell's daughters told police that they threw cups of water on Kylie
to try to revive her after she passed out and started bleeding,
officials said. The medical examiner's office said Kylie suffered severe
head trauma and died as a result of being left untreated for several
hours, Oommen said.
Police said they were called to the home in February after Kylie's
father noticed a bruise on her head. Hardwell told police that she did
not cause the bruise and she was not charged, officials said.
The Department of Children and Family Services had an unfounded
investigation of abuse against Kylie's mother in February, said DCFS
spokesman Kendall Marlowe. In May, though, DCFS substantiated an
allegation of neglect against Hardwell regarding another child, Marlowe
said.
DCFS officials have removed Hardwell's daughters from the home.
Hardwell is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
