Batavia Mother on Trial for Allegedly Raping 13-Year-Old Boy

Batavia, NY, August 30, 2007) - - A foster mother is on trial Thursday
night for allegedly raping a 13-year old boy. Senior Correspondent Rich
Newberg reports from Batavia with the very latest on the case.
Debra Knauber of Darien took the stand Thursday in her own defense.
Yesterday her 13 year old foster son told the jury he had been sexually
abused by her. She denied it.
Debra Knauber told the jury she never touched her 13 year old foster son
in a sexual way. She is accused of victimizing him on several occasions
last year.
Lawrence Friedman, Genesee County D.A., "April, May, and June of last
year and the charges are rape in the second degree, criminal sexual act
in the second degree, and sexual abuse in the second degree."
The 44 year old foster mother and her husband Frank once had six
children in the house. They adopted three of their foster children and
were said to be ready to adopt the 13 year old, but not his sister.
The Knauber's pastor, Reverand Charles Alexander believes the sister may
have set up Debra out of jealosy.
Rev. Charles Alexander, "Sibling rivalry. They had said they would adopt
the boy, but they do not want to adopt the girl, the sister, and of
course that's going to make jealousy, which you can understand, and who
knows what develops after that."
Mrs. Knauber taught Sunday school at the Corfu United Presyterian Church
for seven years, and was a nurse at the Brothers of Mercy Rehab Center
in Lancaster.
Family friend Marjorie Wotherspoon says Debra has been highly respected
in her community.
Marjorie Wotherspoon, family friend, "Something terribly wrong has
happened in this case, because Debra could just not hurt a child."
Closing arguments are scheduled for Friday afternoon.

human rights violations and deaths of children then the homes from which
they were removed. When are the judges going to wake up and see that
they are sending children to their death and a life of abuse when
children are removed from safe homes based on the mere opinion of a
bunch of social workers.
