Regardless of amount it's still an expansion -- an
improvement over a recession or Depression. I have to
agree that this isn't exactly a "full head of steam",
though, and the deficit is paying for part of this expansion,
a deficit that will become part of the public debt which
is at almost $8.2T -- and counting.
And then there's the missing jobs, though part of
that can be blamed on al Qaeda, Wilma, and Katrina.
(But only part.)

Of course the problem with such commentary is that there's
no method by which one can determine whether we would have
been better off had we increased taxes to stave off the
deficits.

No - the deficit is greater than the amount of the expansion,
amounting to some 3-4% of GNP. The "expansion" is an illusion caused
by us living beyond our means - we are really in a recession if one
removes the wealth that we borrowed from our kids.
And people know this, because their paychecks aren't keeping up with
the cost of living.
