California Thanksgiving Proclamation |
An official state recognition of God...
Thanksgiving proclamation - 1904
"Whereas, The people of the State of California are peculiarly
blessed in a beautiful land, favored beyond measure--a land
where the best things of every clime are plenteously at hand, and
Providence has guided us to build here a commonwealth
founded firm in the principles of Magna Charta and the moral law,
so that to-day we are a contented people, secure in our liberties,
sane and God-fearing in our daily life, without disastrous inner
dissensions or class strife, and amenable at all times to the dictates
of justice and the rules of fair dealing; and,
Whereas, We have had during the past year bountiful harvests
of many kinds, our varied manufacturing industries are prospering,
and our material welfare generally is greater than ever
before, with possibilities more hopeful and alluring than those
vouchsafed to any other people wheresoever situated; and,
Whereas, We realize that all we are and all we have as a
people is by favor of the all-loving God, whose continuous care is
the basis of our welfare.
Now, Therefore, I, George C. Pardee, Governor of the State of
California, in accordance with custom and with the proclamation
of the President of the United States, do hereby appoint and set
apart Thursday, the twenty-fourth day of November, A. D. 1904, as
a Public Holiday, on which day all public and all but the most
necessary private business should be laid aside, in order that our
people may have opportunity to offer up their thanks to God for
His past mercies, and, as one people, supplicate for the
continuance of His favors.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused
the Great Seal of State to be hereunto affixed at the city of
Sacramento, California, this fifth day of November, nineteen
hundred and four."

Issued about 16 months before the disasterous earthquake of
1906, which killed several thousand, injured a quarter
of a million, and caused nearly a half-billion dollars
of damage (in 1906 dollars).
Apparently God was not "supplicated" lavishly enough for His tastes.

So, praise God, and die by the thousands?
Between other Christians telling me that "natural disasters"
are demonstrations of God's wrath, and Christians such as
yourself telling me they're manifestions of the power of the
devil, I'm really not sure what to think.
