Educators would walk fine line in Bible teaching

ATHENS, Ala. —
If the Alabama Legislature passes a bill to allow Bible literacy to be
taught as a high school elective, teachers would walk a fine line between
separating the teaching of the Bible’s influence on society from teaching
their personal religious beliefs.
Rep. Ken Guin, D-Carbon Hill, and House Majority Leader Seth Hammet,
D-Andalusia, introduced House Bill 58 that would specify that each local
board of education would be granted the authority to offer the course in
ninth through 12th grades within its jurisdiction. The bill is on the House
calendar but has not come up for a vote.
Guin cites a survey of 41 top-ranked teachers and 1,002 students jointly
conducted by Gallup and the Bible Literacy Project — a non-partisan,
non-profit endeavor founded in 2001 to promote the academic study of the
Bible in public schools — as a need for this legislation.

.. . . You can't understand a phrase such as "Congress shall make no law

take their meaning from social as well as textual contexts, which is why "a
