French students demonstrate their economic illiteracy for the world to see... |
PARIS (Reuters) - France braced for mass protests on Saturday against a new
employment law as unions said more than 1 million people would march to
increase pressure on the government to repeal the measure.
Opposition to the new contract has provoked a serious crisis for the
government of Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin as it has mobilized
students, the left-wing opposition and unions.
In a bid to further increase pressure, a key union leader said the march
could be followed by a general strike.
"If they don't listen to us we are going to have to think about moving to a
general strike across the whole country," said Bernard Thibault, head of the
Confederation of General Workers union, one of France's largest.
"I'm optimistic ... that the government will finally take notice of the
situation they've created for themselves," he said on France 3 television,
adding the march would top the March 7 rallies when unions said 1 million
people took to the streets.
Villepin says his First Job Contract will help young people find jobs,
crucial because youth unemployment is more than double the national average
and rises to 50 percent in some poor suburbs where it was a factor behind
riots in November.
But the law allows employers to dismiss people under 26 at any time during a
2-year trial period and that would destroy job security, critics say.
"I would say 'no' (to a job offered under the law) because I would have no
security for two years," Jerome Desprol, 24, told Reuters.

============================================
Where does this clown get the idea that he has a right to 2 years of job
security? Large segments of the young population in France (>20%) are
unemployable because the prospect of being stuck with a marginal performer
on the payroll for 2 years is too big of an economic risk for employers to
take on young people with minimal skills, experience, and employment track
records. One politician tries to do something about the situtation, and the
country throws a collective tantrum.
Europe's days are numbered if they can't solve their immigration and
unemployment problems...

In 2003 a sociologist from Rutgers University named Ted Goertzel
wrote a paper in which he offered some insight into the psyche
of the left. Interesting reading:
In the 1970s, Stanley Rothman and Robert Lichter
administered Thematic Apperception Tests to a large sample of
"new left" radicals (Roots of Radicalism, 1982). They found that
activists were characterized by weakened self-esteem, injured
narcissism and paranoid tendencies. They were preoccupied with
power and attracted to radical ideologies that offered clear and
unambiguous answers to their questions. . . .
The unwillingness to offer alternatives reveals a lack of
self-confidence and self-esteem. If they offered their own
policy ideas they would be vulnerable to criticism. They would
run the risk that their ideas would fail, or would not seem
persuasive to others. This is especially difficult for anti-
capitalists after the fall of the Soviet Union. It has also been
difficult in the war against terrorism because Saddam Hussein
and Osama bin Laden are such unsympathetic figures.
Psychologically, it is easier to blame America for not finding a
solution than it is to put one's own ideas on the line.

Not for long. Globalization change everything we know about how economy
works. If we does not reform our society to be able to cope with
globalization US economy is going to collapse in less than a decade. While,
French will cope "bien" with globalization realities.

Q. What is the difference between the Unabomber, Ted

A. There was at least some chance Teddy had bathed

Well, it's apparently wasted on you, as your inability to express a cogent
thought in a grammatically correct manner is evident.
Except for this, French labor laws are way better than everything US
have.
The French unemployment rate is far higher than the US rate (10% vs.
4-5%), and the rate for youth is even higher. What good do labor laws do
when you are unemployed?
In US an unemployed is just erased from statistics if he does not find a
job
in 13 weeks insurance period.
Sources? Cites?
Also a math graduate working as poop scooper (because his job was
offshored)
is recorded as an employed poop scooper and not as an unemployed
scientist.
You can not compare the unemployment in US with EU since you measure with
different scales. 1 inch is not smaller than 2 centimeters despite the
fact
that 1 is smaller than 2. Can you understand that ?
I can understand that you don't know what the hell you are talking about,
which is why you are stumbling all over yourself. Once again, please explain
how the present job security regimen in France has nothing to do with the
20%+ unemployment rate among French youth.
We are going to see this in short time due to globalization. EU will
cope
wit it. US economy may collapse due to globalization if we do not apply
reforms "a-la Francaise" soon enough.
And your assessment is based on what? Sources? Cites?
Polarization in society is harmfull for the economy.
No sources or cites, I see.

If you believe the unemployed (including the under-employed) in the

The French unemployment rate is far higher than the US rate (10% vs.

In US an unemployed is just erased from statistics if he does not find a

If you believe the unemployed (including the under-employed) in the

In the US unemployed is defined as:
# Unemployed persons: All persons who had no employment during the
reference week, were available for work, except for temporary illness,
and had made specific efforts to find employment some time during the
4 week-period ending with the reference week. Persons who were waiting
to be recalled to a job from which they had been laid off need not
have been looking for work to be classified as unemployed.
http://www.bls.gov/dolfaq/bls_ques23.htm
So once you get discouraged and stopped looking you are magically no
longer unemployed.
SOme better measures can be found here:
http://www.bls.gov/webapps/legacy/cpsatab12.htm
From that page we get these additional measures:
Marginally attached workers are persons who currently are neither
working nor looking for work but indicate that they want and are
available for a job and have looked for work sometime in the recent
past.
Discouraged workers, a subset of the marginally attached, have given
a job-market related reason for not currently looking for a job.
Persons employed part time for economic reasons are those who want and
are available for full-time work but have had to settle for a
part-time schedule.
The unemployed plus Marginal attached combined rate is now 6.1%.
It was 4.8% when Clinton left office, reached 7.5% in 2003 and
declined all the way to 5.5 last October but has been climbing again
since then.

I believe it is better a good thought badly expressed to a bad thought well
expressed. Hitler had no problem expressing his ideas. Do you like him ?
Once again, please
explain how the present job security regimen in France has nothing to do
with the 20%+ unemployment rate among French youth.
I didn't said it have nothing to do. I also show what it is the biggest
issue with French system in today's new economic realities.
What I said is that the French system it is going to be more stable in the
new globalized world, while the former strength of US economy is quickly
becoming a liability and is going to hurt us.
Polarization in society is harmfull for the economy.
No sources or cites, I see.
The disparity in income betwen poor and rich is measured by Gini
coefficient. A map of Gini coefficient can be seen on wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:World_Map_Gini_coefficient.png
or for more explanations:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gini_coefficient
As we see, the country with a bigger polarization betwen poor and rich
are countries with a higher degree of poverty and disfunctional economies.

So, this stupid petite grenouille will have NO job,
because if the employer isn't allowed to get rid of
someone either for performance reasons or because the
market goes sour, he just won't hire the kids at all.
How are you better off: Having a job that isn't secure
(which provides you an incentive to work hard), or
having no job at all?
The unemployment rate in France overall is over 10%.
The rate for young people (< 30 years) is something
like 25%, rising to 50% in the teeming seething filthy
slums. Labor market rigidity guarantees those rates
will remain high, which in turn guarantees social unrest.

the french students are hero's, freedom fighters, and patriots.
they are fighting for the right to full physical, economic, and
political self determination as well as the full sovereignty of there

they are fighting very powerful world government forces lead by
libertarian fascism.
i wish them all the best because once the libertarian fascists can no

where ever there has been fascism, you will find a libertarian

Well, you now fall into another extreme. You are the opposite of Stan SD
but going to the extreme may unfortunate make you no much better than him.
Now the protests degenerated in rioting. While I fully agree with the right
of students/workers to demonstrate/strike for their own rights, I can not
agree with violence and burning cars.

Correct. However, violence is not going to help their cause.
They were much better with a peacefull protest followed by negotiations.
Especially in France, where unless US they have a decent welfare system,
the job security could be negotiated by smarter means.
For example, in order to improve job security they could ask for a certain
notice time and explanation of layoffs and a better welfare payment if they
were dismissed not by their own fault. The gov. could agree in exchange to
the right to link the welfare payment by the requirement for the youngsters
to go back to school to get a new degree into a field from a gov. mandated
list.
There can always be a decent way of compromise good for both parts but
not by rioting. Violence is always bad.
