How Liberals Think (If At All)
by Dennis Lombard
A letter to the editor in our local daily newspaper asks, "Why would the
Bush administration be concerned with poorer people, many uninsured, who
vote Democratic?" It was a pejorative question not expecting an answer, just
making an unkind political statement. Surely the writer is not a Republican.
His complaint is that President Bush (and Governor Bush as well) were
negligent in not sending FEMA to our community in the wake of the tornado
that struck Riviera Beach on August 7. His statements were based on some
false premises:
That the President is free to override the Congress in the FEMA laws which
Congress, not the president, wrote. "Surely, if the 63 homes had belonged to
Republican contributors," the writer says, "the president would have found a
way." My logic teacher used to call that argumentum ad absurdum. I call it
just absurd.
- That such "negligence" is evidence of "utter lack of compassion."
- That the help extended by Home Depot, the Red Cross and others was
terribly inadequate and serves only to put the President to shame.
To set the record straight, President Bush has greatly encourages
community-based help to the needy, and liberals have cried foul. He's tried
to reduce federal government. Liberals say, let the federal government do it
all! My Dad used to tell me that this was like taking a pint of blood out of
one arm, spilling half of it, and putting it back into the other arm -
wasteful, inefficient, and unnecessary.
I don't mean to pick on this letter-writer; I don't even know him. And even
the local pols got into the act of dissing Bush over this non-major
disaster. One could almost say, "Too bad more homes were not destroyed, for
it would have brought in federal help." As if that's going to solve
everything. If we as a community can't help each other, what hope is there
for us at all?
County Commissioner Addie Greene, the local paper reported, thought that
Governor Bush should have appealed the decision allegedly made by his
brother, and that President Bush's "refusal" to help was politically
motivated. I can't believe she (reportedly) accused President Bush of
getting even with local Democrats for Election 2000.
Only the most die-hard Democrats still cling to the opinion that the
Presidency was "stolen" in Florida in 2000. The local media, including that
Democratic-leaning local paper beat the results to death in a post-mortem
that spent thousands and discovered only that there was no way to overturn
the official results. In my opinion it is journalistically and politically
irresponsible to keep beating that dead horse when we have a War Against
Terrorism, a sluggish economy, and the height of the hurricane season to
deal with.
County Chairwoman Karen Marcus was quoted as saying, "These people didn't
ask for this storm..." as if somebody really thought they did. She was right
in concluding, "We need to work a little harder to get more resources for
them." If by "we" Ms. Marcus means us, you and me, we neighbors of the
unfortunate folks whose homes were destroyed, she's right on!
It's a community thing, with federal help coming only when the size of the
disaster puts help beyond local resources. And the community did indeed
offer much help, from the personal help of neighbors helping neighbors, to
corporations kicking in with enlightened self-interest, to the fine
political job done by Riviera Beach Mayor Michael Brown in marshaling local
help.
It's good the Governor did not appeal to the President, for that would have
delayed by a month some low-cost loans now available and already being
administered in the community by the Small Business Administration. See
that, liberals, you did get some federal help after all!

ideology coupled with a system that believed in the superiority of the state
at the expense of the individual was murderously synergistic.

So we have to create them with our brains and defend them with our blood.
