Hampton Roads Separation of Church and State Group

ELLERY SCHEMPP
Friday, October 14, 2005, 6-7:30pm At the Unitarian Church of Norfolk
On November 26, 1956 Ellery [ a 16 year old boy in Nigh School] staged a
protest against the school requirement that each student read 10 Bible
passages and the Lord's Prayer each day during homeroom. Instead, Ellery
brought a copy of the Qur'an and read from that. For this, he was sent to
the Principal's office. With the help of his father Edward Schempp and the
American Civil Liberties Union, sued the Abington School district over
their policy of mandatory Bible readings.
The U S Supreme Court case that resulted from this was
Abington Township v. Schempp, 374 U.S. 203 (1963)

Ellery later earned a PhD. in Physics. His work ranged from
superconductors to wind power to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). His
private endeavors have ranged from climbing the Himalayas to frequent
speaking engagements on church-state issues.

Clark Moeller is a member of the Executive Committee of the Pennsylvania
Alliance For Democracy (PAD) and was its first President for four years,
during which time he helped lay PAD's organizational foundation as a full
time volunteer.
