For details on ordering a specialty license plate or an “In God We Trust”
plate, visit the state’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles site at
http://www.in.gov/bmv/plates
If they are so inclined, Hoosier motorists can now use their license plates
to share their faith in God or their opposition to abortion.
This month, the state's Bureau of Motor Vehicles issued 12 new license
plates, among them an "In God We Trust" plate and a "Choose Life" plate.
The "In God We Trust Plate" is an alternative regular plate, meaning that
motorists can request it without paying any extra fees above the standard
registration charges. During the first week of sales, the
BMV had already sold 3,778 such plates, which are navy blue and include an
American flag along with the "In God We Trust" phrase.
Rep. Woody Burton, R-Greenwood, sponsored the legislation to allow the
plate.
"I'm a faith-based person, anyways, and there had been so much attack on
religion throughout this country," Burton said.
Burton said the plate shouldn't raise any "separation of church and state"
issues, because its sentiment is very general and does not promote any
particular faith.
"We're not specifying any religion," said Burton, who attends the
nondenominational Greenwood Christian Church.
The other plates, including the "Choose Life" plate, require group and
administrative fees ($40 total for most of the plates). Some of the plates,
including "Choose Life," also require purchasers to have an authorization
form from the organization that sponsored the plate.
The Indiana Association of Pregnancy Centers is the "Choose Life" plate's
sponsor, and a portion of the fees from plate sales will benefit pregnancy
centers statewide, such as the Pregnancy Resource Center in Evansville. To
qualify for funding, centers must be 501c3 nonprofit organizations, they
must encourage women to carry their pregnancies to term and they cannot be
affiliated with abortion activity.

.. . . You can't understand a phrase such as "Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion" by syllogistic reasoning. Words
take their meaning from social as well as textual contexts, which is why "a
page of history is worth a volume of logic." New York Trust Co. v. Eisner,

"You pilot always into an unknown future;
facts are your only clue. Get the facts!"
That philosophy 'snipit' helped to get me, and my crew, through a good
many combat missions and far too many scary, inflight, emergencies.
It has also played a significant role in helping me to expose the
plethora of radical Christian propaganda and lies that we find at
almost every media turn.
