Left-Wing Stupidity In The Educational System -- Eliminating Competition |
Eliminating competition from the lives of young children makes them
intellectually lazy, a trait they bring into adulthood, complete with
an entitlement mentality: "I don't have to compete or win because I
already have self-esteem." Self-esteem comes from success, from
winning, or at least from doing well at something non-competitive. But
when the world tells you that you deserve self-esteem without having
to earn it, they are doing a tremendous disservice to those they
believe they are helping to [gag] feel good about themselves.
It's no wonder the culture is filled with people who have the idea
that they have infinite worth simply because they breathe.
________
In Praise Of Competition
By Burt Prelutsky
I would like to know the name of the buffoon who first decided that
competition was a bad thing. Who was the silly goose who woke up one
morning with the goofy notion that kids shouldn't keep score in their
games so that the members of the losing team wouldn't suffer from low
self-esteem? And what fathead decided that high schools shouldn't
have valedictorians because all the other seniors would feel like a
bunch of underachievers?
No doubt it was the same idiot who determined that a level playing
field didn't really mean equal opportunity, but equal results. But
who was he? Could it possibly have been, as I suspect, Dr. Spock?
And, if so, why wasn't he ridden out of town on a rail?
It's not that I'm unaware that there can be a dark side to
competition, but that's only when the wrong people decide that the
ends always justify the means, whether those means involve lying,
stealing or back-stabbing.

-------------------------
Competition is LESS supportive of skill development than is group
cooperation. People learn best with others to bounce ideas off of,
and accomplish the most with the diversity of one's differing
fellows! In fact, in that way people can "compete" at cooperating.
Trying to tell us that compettion and cooperation are are diametrically
opposed is purest bollocks!
And as for self-esteem, people develop it by group cooperation and
group consciousness, because it is inherent in self-esteem that we
look to how and whether others value us to know our value.
Your baloney here is well-sliced alright, but it is still baloney!!

bunch of underachievers?
---------------------------
It is simply true that the focus on achievement in understanding rhe
MATERIAL is SIDETRACKED by concerns of academic competition! Look to
the stupid "no child left behind" ***** of this administration and
that it has invariably forced teachers to "teach to the test" rather
than teach the material coherently and with cooperative interaction.
No doubt it was the same idiot who determined that a level playing
field didn't really mean equal opportunity, but equal results.
----------------------------
The problem with SO-CALLED competitive Capitalist society is that it
isn't fair to those who DO do the work and who DO try. And why? Because
the thrust of Capitalism is NOT merit-based advancement, but catch as
catch-can thievery and dishonest corrupt conniving as some supposed
quality for identifying those with greatest "merit", when actually all
we do thereby is hand our society over to CRIMINALS!!
Any Socialist society does a FAR BETTER job of identifying true merit,
if that is what everybody wants to do, but instead, a Socialist society
sees that the ONLY reason some are left behind is the accumulation of
nothing more than random bad luck, and that with social effort, the
society can recompense the deprived with remedial re-training, and NOT
merely with some feel-good give-away!
But
who was he? Could it possibly have been, as I suspect, Dr. Spock?
And, if so, why wasn't he ridden out of town on a rail?
--------------------------------------
Trotting out Dr. Benjamin Spock you as your whipping boy won't
help you.
It's not that I'm unaware that there can be a dark side to
competition, but that's only when the wrong people decide that the
ends always justify the means, whether those means involve lying,
stealing or back-stabbing.
-----------------------------
But that lying, stealing, and back-stabbing IS the essence of
Capitalism! The notion that someone must win everything is inherently
wrong, unfair, and unDemocratic. But that *IS* what Capitalism
ultimately promotes, even though it imagines it will be well-received!

I would like to know the name of the buffoon who first decided that
competition was a bad thing. Who was the silly goose who woke up
one
morning with the goofy notion that kids shouldn't keep score in
their
games so that the members of the losing team wouldn't suffer from
low
self-esteem?
