[Maher] Arar was detained on Sept. 26, 2002, during a stopover at
New York's JFK airport as he was returning home to Canada
after a vacation. He was held for two weeks in the United States,
then flown on a private plane to Jordan and driven across
the border to Syria where he was tortured, questioned and
held for a year without charges.

Later this month, Arar will receive an award for human rights
from the Institute of Policy Studies in Washington for the
"bold actions to demand justice for the suffering he endured
as a victim of the U.S. policy known as extraordinary rendition,"
the institute has announced.
The announcement said he would accept his award via video.
But Canada has requested Arar be taken off the U.S. no-fly list,
so it may be possible for him to attend.
Arar is now appealing a court finding that he cannot
sue the U.S. government on grounds of national security.

Arar was detained at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport
in 2002, deported to Syria under the federal government's
"extraordinary rendition" policy and tortured during interrogation
at a Damascus prison.
Arar worked as a telecommunications engineer for MathWorks
in Natick while he lived in Framingham [Massachusetts].
He has so far been unable to find a job in Canada,
where he is a citizen.
