DENVER -- Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper is guaranteeing a college
education to some middle school students -- as long as they graduate high
school.
Hickenlooper said the plan is initially for students at Cole Middle School
in northeast Denver, but he hopes to be able to offer it to all low-income
Denver students in the near future.
He said the idea is that the city and Denver Public Schools will secure
private funding to fill in the financial gaps for low-income students
whose needs aren't met by scholarships and other aid.
Almost all of Cole's students qualify for subsidized lunch assistance.
Hickenlooper said details of the plan should be available within two months.
The school is the only one in the state to have rated unsatisfactory for
three straight years. If students' test scores don't improve this year,
the school faces conversion to a charter school.
