I was inspired in reading the NEA's (my teacher organization) core
value concerning Collective Action. In this core value, they state
that individuals (I think they really mean society but we'll use their
word) get stronger when they work cooperatively for the common good.
At first, I wasn't sure about that phrase, common good, since it
sounded very communistic to me. However, God led me through the
following in my mind.... (G for God, M for me)
G - Is avoiding hell a good thing?
M - Yeah...but..
G - Would it be good if as many people get saved from hell as
possible?
M - Yes. It would (starting to see where He was going).
G - Would society and individuals be strengthened, therefore, if
mankind would work together for the common good of the salvation of
man from hell?
M - Indeed, they would.
Note that this doesn't mean that teachers need preach or even mention
their own faith's views. They can still pray, though, for their kids
(silently).
Indeed, think about the phrase "common good." Who defines what is a
common good? If it is the majority, there are (by statistics) a very
large majority of Christians in this country that decided that
avoiding hell was, indeed, a good thing. That would make society
approved decision of what is ... GOOD.
Amen. The NEA definitely has something, here.
