DA: Foster Mom Confessed To Killing Girl

OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- A North County woman confessed to beating her
4-year-old foster child, who died the next day, according to prosecutors.
Dania Haros, 23, showed no expression, as the prosecutor described how
she allegedly killed Angelina Espalin in November 2006.
The prosecution said at first Haros denied harming the child and then
later admitted she beat the child. She had been caring for the girl for
only six months before Espalin died. She was first taken to Tri-City
Medical Center and was then transferred to Rady Children's Hospital,
where she died of "significant brain swelling," according to Deputy
District Attorney Kelly Mok.
Among her injuries were bruises on her face and body and 30 wounds on
her scalp. The cause of death, Mok said, was blunt force trauma.
The girl's birth mother, Patricia Espalin, cried as she heard details of
her daughter's death.
"Anybody who does this to a child doesn't even deserve to be in prison
for the rest of their life. They don't even deserve to live. That's my
honest opinion," she told NBC 7/39.
Before she was placed with Haros and her husband, Angelina lived with
another foster family. That former foster mother, S'te Elmore, told NBC
7/39 she wanted to adopt Angelina, but instead, the girl was taken from
her home, because she and her husband already had 10 children.
"To think that I told Angie that this woman was going to love her and
protect her, and to know she did those things to her... and she trusted
me," Elmore said, her voice quivering.
Haros is due to be back in court on Monday when she will enter a plea to
the murder charge. The prosecutor said Haros is a flight risk and asked
that bail be set at $10 million. The judge agreed she is a flight risk
but set bail at $5 million.

It is sickening how many children are subject to abuse, neglect and even
killed at the hands of Child Protective Services.

Imagine that, 6.4 children die at the hands of the very agencies that
are supposed to protect them and only 1.5 at the hands of parents per
100,000 children. CPS perpetrates more abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse
and kills more children then parents in the United States. If the
citizens of this country hold CPS to the same standards that they hold
parents too. No judge should ever put another child in the hands of ANY
government agency because CPS nationwide is guilty of more harm and
death than any human being combined. CPS nationwide is guilty of more
human rights violations and deaths of children then the homes from which
they were removed. When are the judges going to wake up and see that
they are sending children to their death and a life of abuse when
children are removed from safe homes based on the mere opinion of a
bunch of social workers.
