Exactly. If not to flee prosecution or to perpetrate a fraud,
every adult has the right to take off suddenly, tell no one, and
even cover his or her tracks. That's not very nice if you are
leaving people behind who will worry and who will try to get
people - even the police - to look for you. But it's legal, and
that's a good thing. We don't want to open a can of worms
involving who you would have to tell and how much you have to
tell them.

But when you make a false report of a crime, you've crossed the
line.

She didn't? Where have you been? She most certainly DID. She lied to
the Feds and made up a ridiculous kidnap story involving rape with
hispanics.

But she told this story AFTER they found her, so the lies that she
told had nothing to do with the expense of finding her. If they want
to bill her for the expenses on investigating those lies between the
time she told them and the time she admitted that she had lied, I
agree.
