A New Mexico pastor and her husband were ordered to take parenting
classes as part of their three-year probation after leaving the
youngest of their eight children on a San Mateo sidewalk last June.
Felicia Dominguez, 41, and her husband, Elias, 42, were promised no
more jail time than the few weeks already served when the couple
pleaded no contest Nov. 28 to one misdemeanor count of child
endangerment. Judge Mark Forcum upheld the agreement during sentencing
yesterday but also imposed three years of probation. The Dominquezes
must also attend 25 parenting classes within the next eight months.
After the couple changed their plea, Forcum told them they appear to
be good parents that simply made a mistake. In return for the plea
bargain, the District Attorney’s Office dropped the initial felony
charge lodged against the couple down to a misdemeanor. The change not
only limited their punishment but allowed them to avoid being in court
yesterday. The couple are reportedly back home in New Mexico.
On June 13, the Dominguezes, parents of eight, left the toddler girl
on the sidewalk near the exhaust pipe of their sport utility vehicle.
The couple told authorities they were visiting the Bay Area for a
church conference and returned to a friend’s home around 2:30 a.m.
Felicia Dominguez said she is the pastor of the Love Center, a New
Mexico church.
About 5:15 a.m., a neighbor saw the couple’s SUV parked on the street
with the engine running, and their daughter on the sidewalk two feet
from the tailpipe. The child was discovered unresponsive but
paramedics revived the child successfully. The couple told
investigators they simply forgot the child.
The defendants each posted a $10,000 bail bond shortly after the
incident and the children were reportedly placed back in their care.
