and Chinese dragons, which have no wings.
I was asking for flying SNAKES -- you know: no legs,
extremely elongated bodies, like that. Dragons
are modeled on reptiles, not snakes. But I'd
be happy to be shown otherwise.

Oh come on, you know me: I did go to the site first, looked for
pictures, then searched for "snake" and "serpent"
with no success.
Trying again, I see that I must have bumbled
my search for "serpent", because this time
I do get several matches. My fault. In
fact I certainly should have thought of
Quetzalcoatl myself.
So now let me see if I understand your argument: other
mythologies have flying serpents, so this suggests somehow
that the serpent in Eden was a flying snake, and thus
was Satan?
Why would God have a problem mentioning Satan by
name if it was indeed Satan at play in the Garden?
In any event Satan, as we see later on in the Bible, and even
further on in prophecy, hardly spends his career crawling
about on his belly eating dust. He's having a lot
more fun than that.
No, I belive that the serpent being Satan is one
of those popular but non-Biblical misconceptions
like Eve's eating an "apple", or the first
sin being sexual -- or, as you pointed out
earlier, a whole host of other popular mis-conceptions
involving demons and devils.

Which is consistent with my longtime claim that the snakey
is the only one who comes out of this looking good --
he prods the kids into growing up and taking responsiblity
for themselves -- and thus "light bearer", if unBiblical,
is appropraite.
(of course if he had also taught the kids agriculture,
metal-working, morality, or even fire; the sorts of things
that that his archtypes in other mythologies sometimes
do, then that would have been even better)
