Under the Republicans, the growth industries in America are prison

GOOD SOCIAL PROGRAMS

These simple benefits make for a much better nation. They reduce the
crime rate, help all families equally and allow for much better economic
growth for everyone.
Instead of thousands of different social programs designed for different
people, a small number of simple programs which cover everyone.
* Every person receives proper medical care regardless of their
income.
* All college is free, including medical school and technical school.
* Every unemployed person receives at least $125.00 per week. This
is regardless of whether he or she has worked in the past, and these
payments do not run out. As a result, people don't have to steal for
food. Social problems like violent crime, homelessness, prostitution and
AIDS are very low. The government actually saves money by doing this.
* When a woman is pregnant she receives a twelve month paid leave
from work, receiving 90 percent of normal pay.
* Every person receives at least five weeks of paid vacation from
work each year.
* A mother may take up to 2 months paid leave of absence per year
to care for a sick child, again receiving 90 percent of normal pay.
* The broadcast media is not allowed to air excessively violent
television programs.
* It is illegal to discriminate against anyone based on race,
color, sexual orientation or gender.
* Newspapers are forbidden to publish headlines which promote
racial unrest.
Cooperation is taught to young people, not so much rivalry and
competition. The benefits of cooperation are explained in the book No
Contest by Alfie Kohn.
When the government enacts the above social programs into law, crime in
America will be reduced dramatically.

A few years ago, a hair stylist in England was deeply moved when he
learned of a fire aboard a plane on a runway that killed several
children. His great compassion for others, in addition to the sincere
love and kindness he felt for these children and their families,
inspired him to develop a new flame-resistant material. Using just the
materials available in his own small workshop, this British hair stylist
developed a material with such heat-resistant qualities, it is the only
substance known that can withstand the heat of a 10,000o centigrade
nuclear blast. His daughter helped name the new material Starlite.
During tests involving two thermonuclear blasts the Starlite plastic
remained unharmed, and the temperature behind the 1mm sheet of Starlite

Geez, handing out cash has been so successful in SF that you wish to
implement it in the rest of the country, right???
San Francisco pays the highest cash grants to the homeless-nearly $400 a
month-in California, and recipients are not required to prove residency or
even citizenship. This money magnet has made San Francisco the homeless
capital of the country.

Since 2000, the homeless population of San Francisco has grown by more than
a third, totaling some 7,300 people. In places such as the Tenderloin
district, streets seem little more than galleries of "Checks Cashed" signs,
strip clubs, and wobbly shopping carts packed with worn clothes, trinkets,
and trash. Sidewalks double as sleeping quarters, and the smell of stale
urine is rarely far away.

of less travel, many are wondering if their tax money is being used in the
most effective way. The county spends some $100 million a year on
homelessness.
....while most municipalities offer benefits to the homeless in the form of a
small cash stipend and other benefits such as vouchers or shelter beds, San
Francisco still gives about one-third of its homeless population its
benefits all in cash - as much as $395 a month. At the same time, the number
of deaths among the homeless has increased recently - from 103 in 1995 to
183 in 2000.

Money To Help Homeless May Fuel Addictions
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Homeless advocates recently declared San Francisco
the third meanest city in the United States toward the homeless, after New
York and Atlanta. This despite the fact that San Francisco is a city where
churches feed anyone who needs a meal. It's a city that brings health care
and clean needles to the streets. This is a city that even provides storage
space free of charge for street people who wish to stow their belongings.
When police break up homeless encampments, the Department of Public Works
even cleans up after the homeless and keeps whatever items the workers find
so owners can claim them later. It is not a pleasant job, according to the
DPW's Cesar Luna.
"This is all urine in containers. For some reason they haul this stuff
around with them," Luna says. "We do find stuff like this all of the time,
our co-workers out in the field are constantly dealing with this kind of
nuisance and we are subject to picking it up and removing it... Here we've
got blankets with feces and clothing with feces."
Luna says they also find needles in nearly every encampment.
Despite that, all of the legal items are tagged, covered with tarps to
protect them and stored for 90 days. It's become a full-time job for Luna,
and it's costing taxpayers a bundle. The cleanup and storage costs $5
million a year. Yet, for all that time and all that money, less than 1% of
what is hauled in is ever reclaimed .
It's just one of the areas of expense that leads some to question how the
City spends the money intended to help the homeless. Consider the cash, well
over $300, that San Francisco gives each and every month to some 2,600
homeless people. San Francisco Supervisor Gavin Newsom believes that money,
instead of helping get people off the streets, may be helping to keep them
there. That's why he wants to reduce the cash in favor of a place to stay
and meals. And he's getting support from a source who knows the streets
well.
"That (the money) is the only reason why I came to San Francisco," says
Roger Broyles, who lived on San Francisco's streets for four years. "In
Stockton, a well-known street junkie told me, 'let's go to San Francisco.
They give you a check' and I was taken aback. I couldn't believe it. That
they gave you a check that you could take to a bank and cash it was
unbelievable. When I came to San Francisco and found out it was true, I
didn't want to leave."
Broyles says the very cash payment Newsom is trying to take away enabled him
to live in a park in the Western Addition for 4 years, all the while
shooting speed and smoking crack, paid for by his cash welfare payment and
food stamps he sold.
"The bottom line why I was in this park is because the City paid me to be in
this park," he says now. "The City of San Francisco kept giving me money. I
kept blowing it on drugs and this is where I chose to live."
