A legislative committee wants more information about the state's foster
care system.
A lawsuit filed late last month by the state child advocate alleged that
children in foster care are being abused, sexually assaulted and
returned to unsafe homes.
It also says some caseworkers are so busy that they can't make regular
visits to the kids assigned to them.
Now, the Senate Health, Education and Welfare Committee has called a
hearing for next week to determine whether children are being endangered
because of overburdened caseworkers.
The committee has invited to the meeting child advocate Jametta Alston;
Patricia Martinez, the director of the Department of Children, Youth and
Families; and Jane Hayward, secretary of the Office of Health and Human
Services.
