After a nine-day hunger strike to gain higher wages for
contracted campus employees, Stanford University
students finally had a reason to eat. According to the
university, on Friday, university president John Hennessy
announced the school's living wage would be extended
to "all regular employees" beginning Sept. 1. Students
began fasting on April 12 in opposition to the disparity
between wages earned by contracted employees and
wages earned by Stanford University employees who
are covered by the university's living wage policy.
Stanford Labor Action Coalition spokesman Matt Seriff
Cullick said Stanford janitors, who are contracted employees,
earned a starting wage of $8.50 and a maximum of $10.50.
The university's new living wage policy would bring minimum
wage to $11.15 per hour with benefits and $12.59 per hour
for contracted employees who provide basic services to the
school, such as maintenance, groundskeeping, housing,
and food service, according to the university.
The new policy is expected to apply to 125 to 150 workers.
In addition to setting wage minimums, the policy also allows eligible contracted
employees to receive 10 paid vacation days per year, the university reported.
Hennessy announced his decision to extend the living wage during a 4:30 p.m. meeting
with student members of SLAC. He told students that workers at Stanford's Linear
Accelerator Center would also be eligible for coverage under the living wage policy.
The university reported it would establish a list of preferred contractors who have
agreed to pay employees the university's living wage, and that the list would be
available to all departments.
On Friday, Seriff-Cullick said eight hunger strikers remained from a high of 12.
Two strikers had to bow out for medical reasons, and two more quit due to
work-related issues.
The four hunger strikers that initiated the strike remained steadfast in their
dedication to the cause. "As long as it takes,'' is how long the four original
strikers will fast, Seriff-Cullick said before Hennessy's announcemen

"The army that will defeat terrorism doesn't wear uniforms, or drive
Humvees, or calls in air-strikes. It doesn't have a high command, or
high security, or a high budget. The army that can defeat terrorism
does battle quietly, clearing minefields and vaccinating children. It
undermines military dictatorships and military lobbyists. It subverts
sweatshops and special interests.Where people feel powerless, it
helps them organize for change, and where people are powerful, it
reminds them of their responsibility." ~~~~ Author Unknown ~~~~
